WHITBY FREE PRESS. WEDNESDAY, FEBRUARY 12. 1986, PAGE 9 Crime Stoppers is coming Programs in North America, serving over four million people. The Chiefs of Police have agreed that with the oommunity, the media and the Police working together, Crime Stoppers bas become one of the most effective programs in Bih 1Swan the resuits of the experiment. Eacb week 1 run the battie of trying to keep tbis coiumn within the bounds of this page. The target: 750 words. Lately I bave been bitting off at about 850 words. Too many. So this week, I have sworn to... FROM PG, 7 Corridor Capers cont. one vehicle to anotberwitbin 200 yards of restauran- ts, residential homes and ligbt industry, is causing Witby Ratepayers to ake an opposing position witb regard to Decom's application for a transfer site on tbe Nortbwest corner of Tbickson Rd. and Consumer Dr. The materials to be handled at tbe site, include buman remains, and animal carcasses infected witb communicable disease:- *1) 50 or more tons of buman body parts daily (aborted fetuses, limbs, etc.). *2) non anatomical waste infected with com- municable disease. *3) infected carcass of animais witb com- municable disease. 1The biggest fear is felt to be the populated location and tbe unnecessary bandling of tbe material at the proposed site. If an accident occurs, according to Decom's presentation, the area con- taminated must be cleaned in a prescribed manner and then flooded with 6 percent bleach and lef t to stand for three and a halfbhours. Besides tbe danger presented by the possible presence of a com- municable disease, if the spili occurs on a roadway, that road will bave to be closed for over five bours. According to Decom's submission, if a large ac- cident occurs, the only instructions are: a bio bazard symbol will be displayed on the truck as well as an emergency telephone number. A list of telephone and bospital locations will be in the truck's cab, and tbat driver will be trained to keep bystanders away. REAL SAFETY Because of tbe transfer of materiai, tbe probable incidence of accidenta, driving to and around Wbit- by, increases (50 or more trucks) as will the probability of a spili when transferring the material. The common logic of bandling tbe material once and loading once, seems to make more sense. Tbe location of tbe site ensures that if an incident does occur, it will affect a very busy route off tbe 401 nortb. If tbe material is infectious, local workers and residents will be endangered. It is essential to bave ail Witby residents condemn tbis action, for tbere are many more intelligent solutions. 0Regulation 309 Environmental Protection Act - June 1985.
