His 14 year old son wanted to buy a second- hand mini (motorized) bike. In a nutshell, I told him I didn't think it was a good idea. He lives as 1 do, right "in town" and I don't know of any legal place to ride close to our homes. Unless you can trailer the bike "Up north" there just isn't the land available in town for trail riding. Permission to ride on private land is difficuit to obtain, as owners of land don't want to have an accident happen on their property. In fact the police force spends a lot of time dealing with complaints of mini bikes, trail bikes, etc. being driven in places where they shouldn't be. You'l meet motorcyclists in parks and greenheit, on cycle paths and sidewalks, and even on the roads <without license, insurance, etc.). Its such a problem that every summer we have to form an "off road" squad who investigate these motorcycle complaints (the officers patrol on trail bikes). Seeing that spring is just "around the corner" maybe this would be a good time to look at "off road" motorcycling rules. An off road vehicle is any two or three wheeled vehicle plus specific vehicles with four or more wheels designed primarily for recreational use. Licence plates. Ail off road vehicle owners must register their vehicles with the Ministry of Tran- sportation and Communications and special licence plates will be issued. It's a one time registration with a fee of $25. Vehicles cannot be registered to anyone under 16 years of age. For two and three wheeled vehicles, the licence plate is to be mounted on the front of the vehicle, in plain view, facing for- wards. For four or more wheeled vehicles the licen- ce plate is to be mounted on the rear of the vehicle. Note, this plate does not licence the vehicle for use on the roadway. The permit issued with the plate is to be carried by the driver of the machine at al times. Insurance la required for aIl off road vehicles being driven anywhere other than on land owned or occupied by the vehicle owner. Proof of insurance must be carried by the driver. Accidents, You must report to the police im- mediately any collision that results in injury to any person or damage to property apparently exceeding $700. In any accident you must remain at the scene - give assistance to anyone injured - and give name, address, permit number and insurance details to anyone sustaining loss or injury. Helmets that meet the motorcycle helmet regulations>must be worn by drivers, passengers and riders on a conveyance (trailer) towed by an off road vehicle, except when on your own property. Drivers licence is not required for off the road riding unless you are crossing the highway. Remember your off road plates do not permit you to drive along the shoulder, boulevards, ditches at the side of roadways. This land is ail part of the high- way. Persons under 12 years are not permitted to drive an off road vehicle except on their own property while under close supervision of an adult. Responsibility rests with the owner of the vehicle as well as the driver for any violations of the off- road vehicles act and hiable for any bass or damage to property caused by the vehicle. To sumn up, 1 think you will agree that getting into off road riding la not as simple as you might have thought. You have to do it right.
