PAGE 10. WEDNESDAY, MARCH 19, 1986, WHITBY FREE PRESS, PROGRESS EDITION Ancalab on leading edge of drug industry Ancalab in- Whitby has always worked hard to main- tain Its reputation as one of the country's leading makers of prescription and non-prescription drugs and with the recent acquisition of the Neo Citron product line, Ancalab has now taken over as the leading dIstributor of cough and cold remedies in Canada. Wlth new product lines coming out all the time, ad- dressing a full range of medical aliments and com- plaints, mlnes which include anti-migrain products, anti- psychotic drugs, calcium supplements, anti-rejection drugs used in transplant surgery and countless other medications, Ancalab has grown and prospered to the point where they now require a major expansion of their already extensive plant on Consumers Dr. According to general manager Dave Denison, the multi-million dollar expan- sion will probably be com- pleted by mid-1988 and will extend to every sector of the plant Including the ad- ministrative offices, analytical laboratories, manufacturing, warehou- sing, even the cafeterias will have to be expanded to ac- commodate the company's remarkable growth. In the past year alone the company has spent close to $1 million to ensure that An- calab continues to maintain a position on the leading edge of the drug manufac- turing and marketing In- dustry. Included In the changes was a shift to plastic medication con- tainers and the purchase of a new high speed, com- puterized tabletIng machine capable of producing 100,000 tablets an hour at the same time that It main- tains quality control. It is quality control, ac- cording to Mr. Denison, that is the major contrlbuting factor in drug pricing. At An- calab, for example, there are more people employed In quality control than In the actual process of manufac- turing the drugs. Perhaps more than any other In- dustry, drug manufacturers must make sure that their product contains exactly what It is that the consumer needs and even the slightest variation in a drug's com- position could have deadly consequences. Literally every ounce of raw materials that arrive at Ancalab must be assayed to ensure that there are no foreign sub. stances present. Once the product is finished It Is again tested for quality and then samples are retained for regular tests to make sure that the drug doesn't break-down during the entire course of Its shelf-life. It Is this kind of commit- ment to excellence that has characterized Ancalab's long history and lndeed that of Its parent company, San- doz Canada Inc. In keeping wlth that commitment, San- doz Canada recently donated $1 million to the Robarts Institute at the University of Western On- tarlo where researchers are breakIng new ground in the fleld of transplant surgery and the study of Immunity. Currently, under the direction of Mrs. Dorothy Williams, President, and Mr. Harold Seibel, General Manager, the Williams team has grown to become the acknowledged experts in two-way radio communications throughout the area. The staff of 15 has well over 100 years of com- bined "hands on" experience of fulfilllng the needs of anyone who wants to "be in touch". As technology advanced, Trunked Radio, a more sophisticated system for wide-area two-way communications, was developed. In 1985, Williams joined with Clearbrook Communications Inc. to provide this service to the region, as well. Also in 1985, Williams was named by Cantel Inc. to be the Oshawa-Whitby dealer for Cantel Cellular Telephones. The cellular technology provides a vast im- provement over the old Bell mobile systems, with total privacy and instant ac- cess for both outgoing and incoming calls. Cantel Inc. was licensed by the CRTC in 1984, to provide competition to Bell and af- filiated phone companies across Canada. The Cantel concept has proven very suc- cessful for ail its dealers, who operate "one stop shops". Williams has renovated an area of their existing building on Taun- ton Rd. E. to provide an attractive, spacious showroom where a client may view the various models available, learn the advantages of making valuable use- of his/her driving time, receive a number assignment, and have the unit installed and serviced, as required. This development enhances the com- plete communications service that Williams has always striven to provide to the region. The scope is wide and varied, all the way from the rental of a couple of hand-held portable radios for a local weekend event, to the engineering and in- stallation of an antenna distribution system within the vast General Motors complex. People "on the move" in the Region of Durham have come to associate the name Williams Communications with professional expertise that is always willing and able to solve any problems that may arise.
