The plant commenced operations in 1959, em- ploying 80 people from the local community in a plant area of approximately 40,000 square feet. Polyethylene film, known as SclaIrfilm, is the major product produced at the plant. This material is used primarily to package food and paper items. The most common end use is the milk pouch, which is sold In food stores across the coun- try. Over its 27 years of operation, the Du Pont plant has expanded its operations 10 times. In 1960, facilities were installed to produce Vexar Plastic netting. This multi-use product can be found in varlous types of plastic fencing and vegetable packaging end uses. Dartek nylon film facilities were installed In 1972 as a means of producing nylon packaging films for meat and cheese products, as well as specialized industrial applications. Today, Du Pont's Whitby site employs close to 300 people in a plant of 215,000 square feet. The last expan- sion occurred in 1984, when a $3.25 million additional warehouse facility was ad- ded to the site to provide improved product availability. Recently, a fur- ther expenditure of $4.1 million was announced to upgrade process equipment, install computer facilities and expand office and laboratory space . to accom- modate sales and marketing functions. Most of the work is expected to be completed in 1986. Safety has always been an integral part of the operation of Du Pont plant. Over 27 years, the plant has ex- perienced only eight work- related lost time injuries, and has not had a work- related lost time injury in over three years. As a com- pany, Du Pont has been con- sistently rated as having one of the best safety records in North America. This success is the result of the commit- ment of ail Du Pont em- ployees to work in a safe manner. Being a valued member of the local community is also an important part of the operation of Du Pont's Whit- by site. Through wages, salaries and local pur- chases, the plant con- tributes to the local economy. The environment In the plant is one which promotes employee involvement in such activities.
