Rouss Rousseau Heritage House was established ln 1929 but its history in Whitby dates back to the 1850's when it was the "Harper Estate". Major Harper was a designer and bullder of wood working machinery, Mayor, Magistrate and leading citizen of the com- munity. Rousseau's has now in- volved three generations of the Rousseau/Polson family living and working at this location. The thriving business has now expanded to three buildings and to the gazebo ln summer. The Main Store, originally the Harper Machine Shop, was aquired by Louis Rousseau (Marcella Polson's father). In this restored building he operated a drapery and upholstery business. Hugh and Marcella Poison became the owners in 1960 and ad- ded antiques and reproduc- tion furniture and ac- cessories. The elegant atmosphere of the 18th and 19th cen- turies are shown In the Main Store. Gallery after gallery of fine hand-crafted pieces from some of America's most prominent manufac- turers are handsomely displayed.
