The original Township of Whitby was surveyed in 1792 and made up the present Town of Whitby and the Township of East Whitby. In 1857 the eastern portion of the Township was established Into a separate municipality called East Whitby, while the western portion retained the old name of Whitby. Whitby was named after a town in Yorkshire, England. In its earliest days, the Town was known as Windsor. However, in 1848 it was changed to Whitby because of confusion in the post office with the Win- dsor near Detroit. In 1855 Whitby was in- corporated as a Town. It was also one of the Municipalities of the former County of Ontario. On January 1, 1968, the former Towqof Whitby and the former Township of Whitby amalgamated to form a new municipality called the Town of Whitby. On January 1, 1974, the County of On- tario was dissolved and the Town of Whit- by became one of eight area municipalities to be located within the new Region of Durham. The eight member municipalities are the City of Oshawa, Towns of Whitby, Ajax, Pickering and Newcastle, and the Townships of Scugog, Uxbridge and Brock. This represents an area of 2,442 sq. km. (943 square miles) and includes approximately 293,507 residents. The Regional Council consists of 30 elected members from local municipalities plus a Chairman. Whitby has three representatives serving the Town on Regional Council. At Regional Council, Mayor Attersley is a member of the Management Committee and Chair- man of the Durham Region Police Com- mission. Councillor Emm is Chairman of the Public Works Committee and Coun- cillor Edwards is a member of the Social Services Committee. The Town of Whitby has a Town Crest, an Official Flag, a Town Motto and an Of- ficial Flower. The Town Crest, which forms part of the Official Seal of the Corporation of the Town of Whitby, was adopted when the Town and Township of Whitby amalgamated in 1968. The sailing ship symbolizes the major impact that shipping had on the development of the Town of Whitby. Whitby was recognized as having one of the finest grain shipping harbours on the north shore of Lake Ontario. The train symbolizes the other transportation used for the development of commerce in the community. Whitby had numerous railways which provided transportation SEE PG 21
