WHITBY FREE PRESS, ýWEDNESDAY. APRIL 1 6. 1986. PAGE 15 Anders on, Henry Street, Denis O'Connor HGH SCHOOL. NEWS WEEK By LAURA SOLETO Anderson Coleglate f Welcome backl1 We have *returned to a warmer school as sprlng bas .officially arrlved. The biting frost bas bld its long awaited farewell and the smiles have reappeareéd on the faces of Andersonians. Having returned from the Easter holiday, let's hope the Easter bunny was good to aIl and that our chocolates were satisfîed 1 With the beautiful weather now here, it la somewhat incongruous to get involved in a campaign entitled "Operation Santa", bowever that is Ander- son's new project for f spring. This involves the collection of new or used toys for the needy children in Brazil: Anderson's student body agrees that this is a fine cause to donate to, however, steps are being taken by the students council to work hard towards the ap- pointed deadline. This deadline will ensure that the Brazilian children have the toys cistributed to them in timne for Christmas 1986. Andersonians are working hard to make some children smile at Christmas time!1 In addition, there are many exciting events occuring at Anderson. Mid-term reports have been issuedi Our next school dance rocks on the night of April 18. Taking a look into the sporting department, girls soccer practices have commenced as have rugby practices. This year's foreign rugby players are due to arrive sbortly. The Welsh players of 84/85 certainly made that year a memorable one 1 Moreover, credit must be given to those deserving of it: congratulations go to Roxanne Kwan, Laura Oeppen and Rod Van Dyke for placing first, second and fourth respectively in the LOSSA West Badminton tournament which was held at Ajax High School and Harwood Secondary School. Each of them has qualified to play in the LOSSA finals which is to be held at Durham College. As LOSSA West finalists, will* be com- peting against the top four finalists of LOSSA East. Good luckl Saturday, April 12, Anderson C.V.I., celebrated its 25th an- niversary with a reunion for Ander- sonians of the past. The festivities included ac- tivities at the school in the afternoon, and a dinner and dance at General Sikorski Hall that night. April promises to bring more than spring showers to Anderson Collegiate. Until next time, adieu!I By TRACI MELCHOR Denis O'Connor H.S. This past week at DO'C was filled with sadness. One of our students, Margaret Uren, grade 10, passed away after a very long bout with cancer. The entire school was touched by ber death. There are many things about Margaret that we remember but one of the most vivid was her terrific ability. Her funeral was on Monday and many of her friends and classmnates, as weil as staff, said good-bye to ber at Holy Redeemer Church. May God bless ber and ber family. As events began to resume- in a normal fashion, the school began preparing itself for next week's spirit week. Auditions were held for the Gong Show and for the Air Band Contest. Very loud and unusual sounds ushered forth from the cafeteria on Tuesday and Thur- sday as 30 groupa gave their best. If the aud- itions are any indication of the actual calibre of the performances, the entire show will be a tremendous success. Next week DO'C's school choir will take part in the Kiwanis Music Festival. This year the festival will be held at Kingsview United Churcb in Oshawa. The choir will be performing pieces sucb as "Everything Must Change" and "Annie Laurie. DO'C's girls' ensem- ble will also be com- peting. Their pieces in- clude "Peter on the Sea" and "Ave Maria". Good luck to alI our musicians.
