According ta Bram- ma, the idea for Vandal Busters was hatcbed last spring when he and Alexander, wbo works at tbe library, and Fred Beckett, a retired parks and recreation em- ployee wltb the Town of Whitby, gat tagether ta do a cable television broadcast, the police constable said Beckett first came up witb the idea ta combat van- dallsm and the threesome put their beads together ta came up, witb a program wbich would conneet with the cildren. Witb Beckett's retirement, Crdick also with the town's rec staff, stepped in and last September they took Vandal Busters ta the schools. Using puppets and a colauring book designeri by Henry Street High School student Lisa An- ttila, Bramma and bis partners make regular visits ta the schaols spreading the message tbat vandalism burts everyone. Because 75 percent cf vandalism is cammitted by youths between the ages of seven and 18, the vandal busters are baping that message will eventually percolate through the entire age range. To that end, they plan ta make the poster cam- petitian an annual event coinciding with an anti- vandalism week. At the May 12 meeting af Whitby Caundil, the tawn, which pays far the pragram's materials and printing casts, wifl present this year's poster competitian win- ners witb their prizes.
