We had two of our students go to New York ,for two weeks in April on a *student' exchange program run by, the Ajax Rotaëy Club. Thé students were Chris Ainsworth and Christina Pereira. They were billeted1 in homes of residents in Honeoye, New York. -Christina says "I was part of the faniily. in the guest home I stayed in." In the morning Chris and Christina went to school in Honeoye, then they went sight seeîng in the afternoon. This leadership'camp is run by the Optimist Club of Ajax. Neil Hembling, a Whitby resident, was selected to represent the grade 10 students in our school. Hé took part in the camp with about 150 other grade 10 students across Ontario. See you next weekl1 By TRACI MELCHOR Denis O'Connor H.S. Music was in the air last, week at, DO'C. Spring Melody, DO'C's annual concert, took place on Wednesday, May 7 and it was a great success. On the previous Mon- day, the school's choir, orchestra, and the girls' ensemble ran through their dress rehearsal and our feeder schools had a preview' of the concert. On Wednesday evening everything came together for an excellent evening of en- tertainment. Congratu- lations to ail participan- ts for an enjoyable con- cert. it may seem a bit early for the yearbook's release but this year's DO'CUMENT was distributed two weeks ago. There was a P.M. assembly timetable and the last hour of the day was devoted to persuing the coveted yearbook and collecting messages fromn friends and teachers. There was mayhem in the halls when everyone was rushing to and fro ar- med with pens, pencils and even crayons. The book's cover was designed by Mathy Theunissen; the editor was Lisa Petersen. Nuala Beattie co- ordinated the adver- tising section and Sean J. Murphy and Gerard delaCosta contributed their outstanding ar-. tistic talent. Mrs. Gale, the staff yearbook ad- DESIGN visor, and the entire yearbook club deserve a fine round of applause for yet another excellent edition. May is, traditionally, a month of excursions and field trips. Heading the list was the grade 10 art class who visited the Art Gallery of Ontario where they viewed the Contemporary Cana- dian Exhibit. -The Metropolitan Forensic Science Lab had a visit from our grade 12 law class and our grade il biology class. At the present timne, the junior French students are enjoying the culture of Quebec City. Moving on to the spor- ts scene, the senior girls' soccer team Mlayed against "Pickering on our home field last week. The girls played an excellent game and won with a final score of 3-0. The superb player of the day was Margot Jelliman who scored ail three goals. Busy spring for Whitby, Brass By JACKY BRAMMA Whltby Brass Band The North Arnerican Brasa Band Champion- ships may be over for another year, but the band plays on in Whitby. We are gearing up for an extremely busy Spring series of engagements in the area. On April 26 we played for the Whitby Lions Club ata parade in Lin- dsay, and enjoyed per- fect- sunny weather quite uncharacteristic for- this particular event. Sunday evening, May 4the band performed for the Ontario Association of Firechiefs Convention at the Ramada Renaissance Hotel. The convention this year is being hosted by Chief Ed Crouch and the Whitby Fire Depar- tment, SO 'it was ap-, propriate that Whitby's own Band lead the memorial service at the opening ceremony, and entertain the gathering afterwards. (We couldn't resist including the march "Blaze Away" In the programn 8!) Another busy weekend foilowed with the Whitby Minor Basebaîl parade on Saturday, May 10 and a Mother's Day concert at Cullen Gardens on May 11 at 2p.rn. We have two sporting engagements th e next week on May 14 for, the Lacrosse Association in Whitby, and May 16 for the Blue Jays game in Toronto. Throughout the Faîl and Winter we watched with great anticipation as the new Bandstand took shape in Whitby's Rotary Centennial Park. Regular concerté by us will be held' there through the suxniner. When Brass Bands were in their heyday in Britain no public park was, considered com- -plete without a ban- dstand. Sunday after- 'noon concerts were a * regular feature for those who choose to sit and listen and for those who preferred to stroîl and let the strains of the band mingle with the scent of flowers .and newly-cut grass and the sound of children playing. We hope that we will be able to revive a little of this- spirit in bringing our music to the people in a pleasant, relaxed atmosphere. ï Ours is a completely I amateur organization in the best sense cf the word, in that we are alI .in it for the love of music. None of us is in- volved professionally in music and we ahl have regular jobs. Ai rehearsals must ba held in the evenings or at weekends, so rnember- ship takes a great deal of commitment by us ail.
