WHITBY FREE PRESS, WFDNESDAY. MAY 21. 1986 PAGE 25 Whitby man shares win ini chess tournament The 1986 AWHPAWO Invitational Chess Championship finished with Michael Szilagyi, Whitby and John W. Puusa, West Hill, leading the pack with 1/2-2/2 scores. The tournament was organized as a tribute to Mr, Raymond Allaire, formerly a resident of Ajax and a former Executive Councillor and tournament organizer of the regional AWHPAWO Chess Association and of its affiliate the West Hill Chess Club. He lef t local chess circles in December, 1985 on being transferred by his employer to North- Eastern Ontario. "It is my wish to see this tournament organized on an annual basis as a lasting tribute to -Raymond Allaire, " said Mr. Ermanno Mucignat, President of the AWHPAWO Chess Association. "Ray came to us in late 1984 and left us in late 1985, unfor- tunately. Not only was he active on an organization basis during that year with us but his tournament playing .strength im- provedfrom that of mid- class C to high class B on the Chess Federation of Canada's national rating system. Therefore, this tour- nament was set up for class -E to class B players in order to in- spire them to, follow in Ray's footsteps." The tournament was run on the double- roundrobin systemn with each participant playing two games with every other participant of the tournament, once with the White pieces and once with the Black pieces. Six participants competed, four of whomn are AWHPAWO residents. The other two are residents of the Scarborough Postal District of the City of Scarborough. The six players started the tournamnent in the following seeded ranking order as deter- mined by their ratings on the Chess Federation of Canada's national mathemnatical rating system:. 1. Daniel L. Allen, Oshawa -1692 (Class B); 2. Michael Szilagy, Whitby-1t44 (Class B); 3. John W. Puusa, West Hlil1 (ClaSs C); 4. Garnet Bugg, Agincourt-1431 (Class C); 5. Garey D). Another interesting aspect of the tour- nament resuits was how each participant played with the White and Black pieces on a com- parative basis. Mr. Szilagyi was the most successful player with the White pieces, while Mr. Puusa led the pack with the Black pieces as the following table shows: White: Michael Szilagyi - 4 wins, 1 tie, a Rder Tool Co. Despite the fact that Mr. Szilagyi and Mr. Puusa each had 71/-21'k scores, the title of 1986 AWHPAWO Invitational Chess Champion was awarded to Mr. Szilagyi, given his greater point count on tiebreak using the Son- nenborn Berger Tiebreak System. The "Sonnenborn Berger" is, a sumnming equation' systemn in which al of his opponents' scores, are summed together, dependent on the players individual results against a given opponent. For a double roundrobin tournament, it works like this: if a player scores 2-0 (2 wins) against a given opponent, 100 percent o! that opponents final resuit is inputted into the player's Sonnenborn Berger sum; if a player scores 1'2-/2(1 win, 1 tie) against a given op- ponent, 75 percent *f that opponents, final' result is added into the sum; in the case of 1-1 (either 1 win, 1 loss or 2 tics), 50 percent is ad- ded to the sum, while 25 percent is added in the event of an 1/241/ result (1 loss, 1 tic). Finally, in the case of 0-2 (2 losses), 0 percent is added. The Sonnenborn Berger Tiebreak Points to Mr. Szilagyi and Mr. Puusa wcre as follows:- Michael Szilagyi: John W. Puusa - 5.63; Daniel L. Allen - 3.25; Garey D. Armstrong - 2.50; Garnet Bugg - 3.50; Julio C. Araoz - 0.00; total tiebreak points - 14.88, awarded first place. John W. Puusa: Michael Szilagyi - 1.88; Daniel L. Allen - 4.88; Garey D. Armstrong - 5.00; Garnet Bugg - 2.63; Julio C. Araoz - 0.00; total tiebreak points - 14.39, awarded second place. If the Sonnenborn Berger System had failed to break the tie, then the resuits of the two Szilagyi-Puusa games would have been used for tiebreak, and Mr, Szilagyi would still have achieved first place, given his 1- score against Mr. Puusa. Mr. Puusa congratulated Mr. Szilagyi on winning the title after such a com- petitive race. Mr. Puusa deemed h.is own result a persona] milestone, given the fact that he achieved Class B status on the CFC's national rating system for the first time and also that he gained the most CFC rating points of any competitor from this tournament. He was also pleased with his resuit, given his in- dividual resuits against Mr. Szilagyi and Mr. Allen. Mr. Szilagyi has a large plus score over Mr. Puusa since they began playing one another in 1983. Accor- dingly, in th)e first haîf of this tournament, Mr. Puusa played the tac- tically dublous Latvian Gambit with the Black pieces against the wily positionally minded Szilagyi and lost after 51 mnoves of tough play. In the second haif of the tournament, Mr. Szilagyi allowed the Queen's Gambit Accep- ted to occur when his Black 1Queen-pawn captured Mr. Puusa 's White Queen's- Bishop- pawn. Nevertheless, both players engaged in a careful positionally minded confrontation, resulting in a tied gamne after 78 moves of play. "My overali resuit since 1983 against Michael Szilagyiis now only one win, seven losses, three ties. Hopefully, lIlI be more successful in evening up the score next year,' said Mr. Puusa. Mr. Allen also has a plus score against Mr. Puusa but not nearly as lopsided as that held by Mr. Szilagyi. Mr. Puusa scored his first-ever win against Mr. Allen in this tournament. Their other game was tied giving Mr. Puusa an overal total since 1984 of one win, two losses, two ties versus Mr. Allen.
