R.A. Sennet Public School on Kng St. was officlally designated snioke-free by the Heart and Stroke Foundation lait Tuesday durlng a ceremony whlch in- cluded the raising of the smoke-free flag. The school also received a plaque and stiekers for each classroom door. The smoke-free designation makes* it compulsory that no one can smoke on school property. The Education com- mittee of the Whitby Heart and Stroke Foun- datlo began informing schools of the smoke- free concept last fal when brochures outling the ides were sent out to 17 schools i the Whitby ares. 0f these 17, eight schools responded of which only R.A. Sennet applied to become smoke-free. "This is an excellent example for the studen- ts," said the principal of R.A. Sennet, Ms. J. Wallcey. She said that before the school decideci to become smoke-free, the teachers held discussions with the students and the decision was unanimous. "Ali the classes said yes."' The principal joked that presently two of the teachers at the school are smokers but with the help of the smoke- free environent, hopefully they 'will be encouraged to quit. "This helps educate the children. at a vuinerable stage of their lives that smoking is bad," said the chairman of the educatlon com- mittee, Ernia Wood. Promoting smoke- free schools in Wbltby is the ffrst major project the foundation's eclucation committee has initiated since it was orginated lait fail. She said the smoke- free concept ln schools is spreading Canada wide and during the recent smoke-free week the Oshawa Heart and Stroke Foundation blit- zed schools in the area. As well as receiving the flag and plaque, the lung foundation made presentations to the students on the hazards of smoking. While schools in, the Durham Reglon are slowly comlng around to the concept - there are, presently six smoke free schools in the region - Woods sald her organization and others In the region are lob- bying the Board of Education -10 officially declare schools smoke- free.
