At present, Whitby along with other municipalities in the region, operate their own handi-transit ser- vice for disabied residents ln their towns. The systenis are run by Handi-T7ransit Imc. But the Recreation Advisory Committee for Special Populations in Oshawa is requesting al the inunicipalities to form one bandi-transit service. "It Is feit the type of service whlch Handi- Transit Inc. offers would be more effective and more efficient If it were offered as a regional service rather than a collection of local services," reads a letter requesting the change from the committee. The town bas decided to orgmilze meetings ,ith representatives from ail the municipalities in the region to determine If the idea lisfeasible. A decision viii ta based on the meetings. The executive la now. busy setting up a series of standing commit- tees whose role will be to boost the party's profile in the community, establlsh policy, raise funds and prepare for the next elec- tion. "We've got a great mix, younger people, older pepeand everybody la rely enthusiastie. We've got about 100 members now and it's steadily growing. We've also got a chairman for election readynes 5 we'll be strong and prepared when the next election is announced. With the province's elec- toral redistribution expec- ted to split Whitby into a new ricing with the western part of Oshawa (Durham Centre) and Durham West to be reshaped to unclude only Ajax and Pickering, Hundert said she believes there la a strong possibility the Liberals will pick up two new seats in the next elec- tion. "I'm really feeling ex- cited. You can just feel the momentum and we're going to be ready for that next election, " said Hundert. The next executive meeting of the Whitby Liberal Association will be held at Hundert's home June 2 beginning at 8 p.m. In the meantime, the association is gearing up for the Liberal's Car Rally to be held June 1 in Whitby and centres across the country. Entry fees for the rally are $15 and Hundert said the one requisite is that participating vehicles should be "conspicuously" Liberal.
