Whitby girl wins major speaking contest Whitby's Barbara Ver- meullen lias won the Op- timist International Central Ontario Oratorical Contest and a $1,000 scholarship to the University of her choice. It was a long road to the central Ontario com- petition, according to Bar- bara's coachi Jim Gamsby. It began back in March when the 14 year old won the Whitby Optimist Club's public speaking com- Se tition. From there Bar- ara went on to compete in the Optimist zone com- petition in Scarborough April 1 where she qualified to compete in the Optimist's regional contest in Port Hope. Emerging witli a first place finish there, Barbara became eligible to compete in the Central Ontario District Contest. Barbara, like ail competitors in the competition, addressed the topic of "Optimism, A Way of Life" said Gamsby who applauded' the young orator's dedication and hard work. "Barbara worked very hard since January to reach this goal and needed very little lielp. The Optimist Club of Whitby is very proud of Barbara and her accomplishment," stated lier coach. At the finals in Toronto May 10, Barbara competed against finalists fromn Ot- tawa, Hamilton and Toron- to before being named the winner. In addition to win- ning the scliolarship, Bar- bara was also presented with a trophy.
