PAGE 8. WEDNESDAY. JULY 2, 1986, WHITBY FREE PRESS - Lins illbuild hall for Brooklin - The newly founded Brooklin Lions Club is off and running, accor- ding to president Dave Brennan and topping the club's list of priorities will be boosting rnembership and building a badly needed cornmunity hall for the people of Brooklin, In an interview last week, Brennan said the community hall will be the clubs major fund raisîng projeet over the next few years aithough the club will also par- ticipate in Lions' camn- paigns for the han- dicapped. A cornmunity hall, hawever, is somnething Brennan said the club perceives as a real necessity in Brookin. "We've gone eut into the community and asked people and a lot have said there's a definate need for a proper comrnunity cen- tre. And we want the public to have this. Heydenshore ih very expensive to rent and really there isn't another proper facility to meet in. We're meeting in the basement of the Brooklin Cornmunity Centre right now but it's just flot adequate, " said Brennan. The Lions' hall would be run as a non-profit facility and rented out- for dances, weddings, bingo, cubs or to any organization looking for a place to get together. It wiil also be totally ac- cessible to the han- dicapped. Brennan said ail proceeds from ren- ting the hall would go back into the cern- munity in the form of BROOKLIN FLOUR M "Country Store Aimosphel STRAWBERRY DELIGHT trom the NEW "DESSERTS" by Jean Pare Crust: 1/2 cup butter (melted) *2 cup grhamn cracker crumbs *¼/ cup white sugar Combine Ingrediants rserve somne for topplng> pres Into ungreaeed 9x13 pan. Although the Lions in- ternational organization has a standard set of plans for a modern, one storey building of ap- proximately 4,000 square feet which will be made available to the new club and club members will do most of the construction, Bren- nan estimated that they will still have to raise close to $250,000 to make the hall a reality. "It's definateiy going to be a big projeet. We'il have a lot of work on our hands," said Brennan. 0f course with ail that work on their hands, Brennan said they are going to need more members to help carry the load and they are now actively cern- paigning for new mem- bers. Right now the club has 24 members and Brennan would like to see that figure up around the 40 mark. However, what the club mnay lack in size, Bren- nan said it more than makes up in spirit. "It's usualiy the littie clubs like Brooklin that have the best clubs in terms of spirit and in- volvernent whereas you see clubs in places like BrDk1 lin By lines Cal6.By BE'lT-JEAN BLYT q~~""Cîi_553679 wlthItemns for thiscolumn The first of July weekend aiways seems to presange the real start of swnmer no matter what the calendar says.
