Tbe contest is open to ail maie and female Whitby residents aged 19 and over. An art exhibit of pain- tings by Canadian ar- tist, Walter Campbel wlll be held in the Canadian Imperial Bank of Commerce at the corner of Brock and Dundas Sts. The day wil also in- clude horse and buggy rides tbroughout down- town and musical enter- tainment wil be provlded by Barber ShoD Quartets and Bob Mooney's' Dixie Land Band. Free Press Staff Photo Whitby headed for a record breaking year By MIKE JOHNSTON Free Press Staff Tbe Town of Whitby is beaded -for a record breaking year, predicts Mayor Bob Attersley. According te a building permit report for the montb of July issued by tbe tewn's public works depar- tment, the value of permits issued as cf July 31, 1986 totals $63,093,717. An increase of almost $20 million over figures for the same time last year. (As of July 31, 1985 per- mits valued at $43,112,934 bad been issued.) "IBy next month we'Il be over the $68.1 million mark, wbicb will set a record," said the Mayor. Mayor Attersley said the building permits issued in the town for 1985 totalled $68.1 million. "And we'll top that in the eigbtb mon- th," be said. "someone is doing sometbing right. " A welcome addition te this mcnth's report is the allocation cf 24 apar- tment units in the town. The Mayor said the apartment block is un- der construction on Ash St. just north cf Mary. And next month's report will show even more apartments geing up in Wbitby, accerding te the Mayor. ".We bave the Sorichetti group and the $1.8 million apartments by Aldom at Dundas St. L~. and the railrcad cressing," said the Mayor. Both apartment buildings wilI. be built witb aid from the province's Renterprise program wbich provides loans towards the building of apar- tments, 40 percent of which must be rent geared te cwn. Another interesting item in the report, are tbe $417,000 in industrial building perniits issued, bringing this year's total te $6,543,000 up over $4 million from last year at this time. (By July 31, 1985 $2,376,000 in permits bad been issued.> "We've been promoting Whitby and I'm pleased with the figures," said the Mayor. He noted that industry in Wbitby is very diver- sified. "And that's good. That is exactly wbat we balve been trying te do. Wben you put ail your eggs in one basket it becemes tee in- dustrialized. I'm a great believer in that. The diversification in Whit- by is werking. " The report aIse noted that 52 permits were issued for single family dwelling units. With the 24 apartment units, the total residential permits issued for July is 76. The value of the residential permits is iisted at $5,690,570. The Mayor neted tbat te date 580 residenial permits have been issued and he predicted that by tbe end of the year the town will have issued between 880 and 900 permits.
