Students, 15 to 18 years old, qualify on the basis of academic per- formance, character references, and a genuine desire to ex- perience life abroad with a volunteer host family from Europe, Australia, New Zealand or the United States. 'ASSE familles abroad are carefuhly screened to provide a caring environment in which students' can Iearn the language and culture of their new host country,' -,explained Poisson. Year students need not have learned a foreign language as they receive language and cultural instruction as part of the ASSE program. ASSE studen- ts attend regular high school classes along with their new teenage friends. 'Asse exchange students learn by living the language and culture of their host country,' added Poisson. The non-profit, public benefit ASSE Inter- national Student Ex- change Program is af- fiiated with the national Swedish and Finnisti Departments ol Education and lE cooperating with thE Canadian provincia Ministries of Education.
