Local provincial riding associations are busily setting, up election readiness committees,. canvassing new mem- bers and soliciting funds, nomination candidates are beginning to declare themselves and ruinours of other possible candidates are flying fast. Just this week two nomination candidates have declared themselves in our new riding of Durham Centre, Liberal Brian Evans and Con- servative Stephanie Bail and several weeks ago Oshawa regional counilor Linda Dionne an- nounced her intention to seek the Durham Centre Conservative nomination as well. Al of which adds up to one thing - the next provincial election is drawing near. Several factors are at work which could make the next election one of the most interesting on Letters to the Editor: To The Editor: Given the option most people would not choose to spend their declining years in a home for the aged, but when a"home for the aged la necessar$ý, Fairview Lodge in Whitby la an obvious choice of the in- formed. For the paat two years, Fairview Lodge has been my mother's (Connie Carsen) home. Here she lived with a sense of dignity in a community where she found good friends and enjoyed a variety of in- terestinig and chailenging activities. Just as rny mother was welcomed, ber family was welcomed as part of Fairview's ex- tended family. On Sep- *ember 2 my mother .ased away. We, her family, find words inadequate to ex- press our appreciation to the staff of Fairview Lodge for their loving and competent care that made my mother's last two years, in spite of serious physical limitations happy and productive. In light of recent criticiams of homes for the aged, we have chosen to submnit this letter to the editor's of surrounding news- papers. Our family feels the public should be aware that there are homes for the aged that truly define "home" in the manner intended. Fair- view Lodge in Whitby la such a home. Sincerely, Caria Carisen Rowe. Bluegrass Meadows To The ditor:- On September 22 1 at- tended a public meeting of the Administrative Comnmittee of the Town of Whitby. I had been invited, by the commit- tee, to attend and ex- press any concerna about a propoaed deveiopmnent by the Durham Non-Profit Housing Corporation project in the Bluegrasa Meadows subdivision. I had some concerna, however I knew these Issues would be presen- ted on rny behalf by other Bluegrass residents. I might add it was a pleasure to see about 300 concerned citîzens pack the meeting hall. As the deputations were 1presented. questions were asked by the committee. Some of these questions were phrased in such a man- ner indicating support of the projeet by sorne councillors. However, after the deputations were presented it became painfully oh- vlouu by the appmmtly prepared suminations by the commlttee nein- bers that individual decialons had been prior to the meeting. Why did the commit- tee have an open meeting? With the ex- ception of councilior Joe Drumm why did the remaining committee members ignore the legitimate concerna of 95 percent of those citizens attending the meeting? This was record. Firstly, there is a new government in Queen's Park for the first time in more than 40 years which should generate voting interest among New Democrats, Liberals and Conser- vatives who once might have felt inclined not to bother showing up at the poils. Liberals this time around will feel they have their first opportunity to elect a majority government, Conservative voters will be worrying for the first time in mernory that they have a fight on their hands and the NDP will be fighting to assert an identity in the midst of a head-to-head battle between the two larger parties. Add to this the fact that the Peterson government was flot actually elected to its new position of power and you will have a con- siderable segment of the population, both for and against, that will be voting to settle the score. And, lastly, the province's new electoral boun- daries are living in newly created ridings or ridings that have been substantially changed. Only 16 ridings of 130 in the province will remain as they were and this, in conjunction with the above factors, should definately generate, greater in- terest at the poils. Residents of Whitby, as reported previously in the Free Press, will be among those voters who will go to the polis in an entirely new riding, Durham Centre, which means this election should be an especially exciting one on the home front. Keeping in mind that the various party faithful are starting to get out and knock on doors we .thought our new boundaries could bear repeating. Durham Centre will be comprised of the area of Oshawa north of King St., west of Rit- son Rd. and south of Taunton Rd. combined with all of Whitby south of Taunton Rd.
