Examine ail hoses,, especiaily the radiator and heater hoses, for swelling, soft spots, cracks, a partial- ly coilapsed condition, cuts and gen- eral deterioration. 2.) Tighten ail hose clamps. Replace those wbich can't be adequately tight- ened, or that show corrosion. 3.) Check ail V-belts for wear on bot- tom and sides. Pay particular attention to the altemator drive. Replace or re- tension as necessary. If beits are more tban four years old, replace tbem re- gardless of visual condition. 4.) Check the coolant for rust and the concentration of antifreeze. Auto parts stores sel! inexpensive testers for checking antifreeze protection. Flush- ing tbe systemn (about every two years) Modern medicine has stressed for years the benefits of a salt-reduced diet for maintaining good health. Likewise, automotive experts have prescribed the saine good advice for automobiles. Un- fortunately, there is no avoiding contact with rnotorway sait. The saine holds true for other corrosive elements such as pollution, hurnidity, sand and dirt. In the past few years, several "rernedies" have appeared on the rnarket. claiming to, make automobiles "rust-proof ". Some are effective but others deliver only marginal resuits. Deter- mninng the difference bet- ween the two is a simple matter of asking the right questions before signing the work order. Asking the right questions Here are a few tips to consider: 1. Avoid treatments that require hole drilling. These actually promote corrosion by giving rust'a foothold on the newly-exposed metal. 2. Ask about the chemical nature of the compound being used. Will it penetrate water, grease and rust right down to the metal, or does it simply sit on top of whatever is already there? 3. Will the rustproofing chemical dry out over a period of time? If the chemical dries, it cracks. This allows water to penetrate to the metal and start rust under the rust- proofing chemical. 4. Is the rustproofing chemical so thin that it drips on your driveway, cornes up on your windows and requires annual reap- plication? 5. Will the company stand behind its work with a warranty? -You should ex- pect any good rust treat- ment to last many years. and replacing the coolant witb a 50- 50 mixture of water and antifreeze is a do-it-yourself job. While the cooling system is drained, this is also a good time to replace #ie upper and lower radiator boses. 5.) Inspect tbe condition of tbe rmdi- ator cap gasket and spring. Check tbe radiator filer neck for nicks that could lead to a pressure loss. 6.) Clean bugs, leaves, paper and otber foreign matter off tbe front of the radiator. Remove by- spraying witb water. Tbis belps die flow cf air tbrougb the radiator. 7.),After tbe cooling system has been inspected and serviced& remove tbe radiator cap and start the engine. If the codlant begins to circulate im- mediately, or if after you bave rein- stailed tbe cap, the upper radiator does not feel like it's conveying warm cool- ant, tbe thermostat wil need re- placing. 6. How long has the com- pany been in business doing its particular application? There have been rnany fly- by-night operations in this field which only stay_ in business a year or two,'and then disappear.., 7. Does the company charge for its annual in- spections? Watch out for hidden charges such as a isrnall" charge for cleaning off the dirt so rnechanics can do their "free" inspection. Will they touch up any wear spots at no charge? One company, Perma- Shine nc., has been found to offer a remarkably corn- prehensive rust treatment. The process - called Perma- Guard Rust Inhibitor - uses a variety of new technologies with some unique benefits. For example, instead of drilling additional holes, the rust inhibitor is sprayed with 100 pounds 0f pressure through manufacturer- created access points. And Perma-Guard will not dry out and crack over a very long period of time. The compound wil not drip or run off and it does not corne up on your windows. Perma-Shine bas been applying Perma-Guard Rust-Inhibitor in Canada sînce 1974. In the 12 years since it began, there has not been a single warranty dlaimi against the process. Even today, the warranty is somewhat unique in the business. Lt covers your new car for 10 years and is transferable when you sel your car. Perrna-Shine's annual in- spection is absolutely free. No hidden costs. The com- pany will also touch up any minor wear spots at no charge. Protecting an automobile from rust and corrosive darnage can often be a good guarantee of long-term driving enjoyrnent. Perma Shine offers Unique Rust Protection
