Pitters is ad- ministrator of Castleview -Wbychwood Towers, a 437-bed home for the aged in Toronto. She is also employed part time by the Canadian Council on Hospital Accreditation as a surveyor reviewing the quality of operation and service provision in long term care facilities across Canada. She is also involved in the education and con- sulting areas of long term care as a workshop facilitator in labour relations for first line mangers. She was formerly administrator of Extendicare Nursing Home in Oshawa. Council welcomes both to tbe board. Vide o store opens Two former data processors are delighted with their first business venture opened four weeks ago at the plaza beside the White Oaks apartments on Dun- das St. W., Whitby. "It's something I always wan- ted to do," says Tom Gavalcik, 26, of Pickering, who bas joined Ken Lindsay, 26, of Witby as partners in video. Gavalcik says he has always been interested in operating such a business since bis former employemnent at Dan- fortb Radio. Whitby was first choice as a place for business, says Gavalcik, but be admits sur- prised at how popular tbeir chosen location bas been. One line of a television model they of- fer sold out in three weeks. More than 500 membersbips bave also been taken out in tbat time for video movie rentaIs. ",We underestimated the location," says Gavalcik. He believes about 70 percent of bis customers tbus far bave corne from the West Lynde area and tbe remainder from tbe next door apartments. "People say to me they've been waiting for the plaza for so long," he says. The store offers 900 movies in botb VHS and Beta. Requests for movies are taken and then put on order for customers. Gavalcik's wife, Pat, bas been working fuil-time since the store opened to help out. Gavalcik says it's "fantastic" to be in business, particularly "bhaving a bit of control over your own destiny. " He says be and Lindsay may open more video outiets in the future: "«Hopefully this wil be tbe first of many. New hair salon LA Haircutters & Perm Place is one of tbe businesses whicb has recently opened at the plaza on Dundas St. W. in Whitby, beside the White Oaks apartments. Debbie Cain, 23, of Oshawa is tbe manager of the new salon owned by a Whitby businessman. "It's a lot of responsibility and it isn't always a lot of fun," says Cain, adding, nevertheless, that sbe's enjoying the challenge. Sbe groomed for the position as assistant manager for a salon at The Bay in Scarborough for a year. Sbe previously worked at The Bay in Toronto.. She is joined by Paula Cic- chinelli of Osbawa and Gayle Hay of Whitby as baircutters at tbe salon. Cicchinelli worked at tbe for- mer Cbristian Pierre bair salon in Witby while Hay worked at The Hair Studio on Brock St. The salon offers full bair care service, says Cain.
