Altbough iL was clear from the start that trustees wanted ta ban smoking, it was unlear when they wanted ta do it. Some, led by Pickering trustee Lamaa Murphy, wanted it ban- ned by Sept. 1, 1989, ta allaw tise for warking out the enforcement. That motion lost in a tie vote. Some, led by Witby trustee Ian Brown, wan- ted the ban in effect by Sept. 1, 1987 ta send a clear message ta students that "what we teach in bealth class we believe in. " That motion lost by one vote. Others, led- by Pickering trustee The DuPant Canada plant in Whitby bas begun an $8.3 million expansion of its nylon film production faiity. The expansion is ta be completed and in operation by early 1988. It will add an estimated 10 Jobs ta the current warkforce oL280. The expansion will 0 significantlIy" increase DuPont's nylon film production, says John Cameron, general manager of packaging. The Witby plant is the only nylon film production facility in the international DuPant organizatian. Besides thé Whitby plant, DuPant Canada bas five otber plants, ail in Ontario (Ajax, Sarnia, Brockville, Kingston and Notet Bay). earnings for Dulant Canada were $13.4 million, compared ta $7.2 million for the third quarter last year. Louise Farr wanted the ban in effect by Sept. 1, 1988 toa alow some time for implementation, but ta have the buildings smoke-free a year sooner. That motion carried. The board bas also banned smoking on ail board praperty by Sept. 1, 1989, in spite of reser- vations from secondary school principals that it would be difficuit to en- force. "What they're op- posed ta isn't enfor- ceable. Smoking isn't against the law,"1 said Robert Farrell, prin- cipal of Eastdale Collegiate in Oshawa. Eastdale is a com- munity use sehool which regularly bas the public paying for tickets ta see such people as Liona' Boyd who performed there recently. Farrell says these concert gpers expect to smoke at intermission. If be tells them flot to, he thinks they are not likely ta obey, and he Earnings for the three quarters this year, ended Sept. 30, are $45 million. Sales for that nine-month periad* are $94 million, campared ta $50 million last year for tbe same period. Cameran says the nylon film mnarket continues ta expand, bath in consumer and industrial demand. He says nylon is strong as packaging material and keeps products fresh by excluding axygen. Nylon is used ta package seat and cheese. Nylon is also used industriaily to manufacture reinforced plastic architectural panels and raw materials for automotive parts, aircraft composites and circuit boards. The Whitby plan, the major Canadian producer of nylon film, supplies domestic and export markets.
