Altbough iL was clear from the start that trustees wanted ta ban smoking, it was unlear when they wanted ta do it. Some, led by Pickering trustee Lamaa Murphy, wanted it ban- ned by Sept. 1, 1989, ta allaw tise for warking out the enforcement. That motion lost in a tie vote. Some, led by Witby trustee Ian Brown, wan- ted the ban in effect by Sept. 1, 1987 ta send a clear message ta students that "what we teach in bealth class we believe in. " That motion lost by one vote. Others, led- by Pickering trustee The DuPant Canada plant in Whitby bas begun an $8.3 million expansion of its nylon film production faiity.
