PAGE Il PAW budget is $2339197< for animal control lIn 1987 By MIKE JOHNSTON The purchase of two animal control vehicles and the hiring of two new staff memnbers has Increased the Pickering-Ajax-Whitby (PAW) animal control budget to $233,19? for 1987. For 1986 PAW bad budgeted $172,600 but the final cost is expected to corne ini at $157,850. The 14,750 saving is mainly due to the PAW decision to only patrol in greas where they are requested. This decision resulted in a $14,000 saving in fuel The two vehicles are expected to cost $32,100. Each of thse tbree towns wîiI contibute $10,700. The committee made the. decision after lear- ning.that it cost $13,000 to lease two vehicles in 1986. The 1987 budget will also allow PAW to hire a fuil-time animal control and pound attendant starting Jan. 1, 1987 as weîl as a student to assist at the pound during the summer months. The three towns will contribute to the budget based on theis- 1986 population. For instance, the population of Whitby in 1986, as reported by PAW, is 45,185, 35 per Shelters Whitby coundil bas given tls approval to the purchase of twa bus shelters for the town. They willbe placed at the southweést corner of Anderson and Dundas St. and the corner of Cochrane and Dundas St. The two shelters will costthe town $7,253. cent of the total population 'of the thre towris. The cost to Pickering is $70,625 while for Ajax itis $55825., Some of the highlights in the budget include the purchase of an electric pressurized washer to assist In cleaning animal wax at the pound and the hiring of an an- swering service. The budget statement notes that there were a number of one-time ex- penses incurred. by PAW ln 1988; 'These ex- penses include office furniture »and. animal traps for the Thickson pound. The Humane society took the fur- niture and animal traps when they vacated thse pound in 1986. PAW is also not ex- pecting to pay nsuch in veterinary costs due to an agreement with area veterinarians. Under thse agreement pound personnel will pick up animal carcasses frons the vet clinlcs ln return for veterinary s"svces at the animal pound. Landscaping at the Thickson pound is aiso scheduled for 1987. The budget must now be ac- cepted by two of the three towns. If only one of the three tawns approves the budget, PAW commit- tee members must go back to tihe -biackboard to revùýe the budget.
