Ail three strip clubs presently in Whitby are located in or, about the downtown area, making them illegal once the bylaW receives third reading. Tbird reading is ex- pected sometime early in the new year. Mayor Bob Attersley said the third reading was delayed s0 council would flot be .criticized for ramming through the bylaw. He said there has been a concern about the clubs in Whitby for a while now and especially in the last six or eight montbs. He said that whiIP. The tbefts occurred between il and 11:45 a.m. on Sunday, Dec. 14. By MIKE JOHNSTON Reaction to tbe bylaw introduced by Witby council whieb would limit aduit entertain- ment parlors to certain areas of town was one of surprise by parlor owners., "'There was no-notice of it. How can tbey just do that," said Nick Mikos part-owner of tbe Royal Hotel on Brock St. N. "It's kind of sudden,". said Ralpb Scbade, manager of Gypsy Rose (formerly the Spruce Hotel). Botb clubs, as well as Skaags, would fali out- side the area in wbich strip clubs would be permitted wben council gives final approval to the bylaw in January. The bylaw would only permit the clubs to be located in a,- block surrounded.by Tbickson Rd. on tbe -west, tbe Osbdwa-Wbitby 'border to tbe east, Victoria, St. to tbe soutb and Taunton Rd. to tbe nortb. Rd. to tbe nortb. (A spokeman for Skaags was unavailable.) Scbade said tbe move was unfair, particularly since "we are an establisbed business. I don't tbink we've had any public complaints," he added. Ha said at- tempts are made to rec- tify i4ny complaint made, b ut that, the establishment, located outside tbe main down- town core, 'exercises rigid self-regulation. The bylaw would corne at a bad time for Mikos, who along with his co-owners,. com- pleted .$70,000 wortb of renovations two montbs ago. "lHow can I move af- ter tbat? 'lbe asked. He said be would not have invested the $70,o00 if he had known about the bylaw. .Schade said tbat aduit entertainment parlors would probably locate or relocate to the area proposed inthe bylaw. He noted that the Gypsy Rose, which also bas undergone renovations under new oerPeter Cbo of Toronto, could offer other types of enter- tainment, sucb as ban- ds, if necessary, sinceit bas the facilities. Mikos said that would be tougherfor him since bis stage is in the center of thefloor. Botb planned to at- tend the public meeting wbicb -will be held' sometime in the new year. Schade said he would. go "lto try to understand wbat's going on." Insiede
