By Alysha Liebregts St. Le's Schaol Brooklin MU&Dopens in Whitby RICHARD HALENDA Richard Halenda adrnits that the days of the independent* delicatessen may be gone, but the opening of his family's faurth M & D European Meats in Durham Region proves they remnain very popular. "We offer the ma and pa quality of service," says Halenda of the recently opened Whitby location, at Dundas St. E. at Garrard Rd. "Here you say what you want and you get it, and it's obvious that people want it." His parents, Michael and Dareen (the "M & D" of the business), had a wholesale business in Toronto before coming to Durham Region. Michael Halenda has been a sausage maker and distributor of European meats for 30 years, says son Richard, 32. Six years ago, the first M & D store was located in Oshawa. "We decided Oshawa needed'a good delicatessen," says Richard. The success of that store led to another location in north Oshawa in September, 1985, and then in Pickering in 1986. Halenda says the Pickering store was apened ta accommodate the number osf customers who were coming fram Toranto ta the Oshawa stores. M & D bought out the Oshawa Meat Products. & Delicatessen, Ltd. location in Whitby. Rick Krechawicz operated that store started by his father, Steve Krechawic, 30 years ago. Halenda says the Whitby store will soon become the head office for M & D European Meats, which now emplays a total af 60 people. Halenda says part of the suc- cess of the store may be the natural-recipes in the spices it of- fers. Some» of these were developed over the years'through customer suggestion. Kobassa is the big seller, about a ton sold each week. "We also 'da 'a mammoth chicken business," says Halenda, adding that about 1,000 pork lains go out every week. 4 SAINGS UP TO 50%1 HUNDREDS 0F ITEMS ON SALE!
