Kidsget 'Koats' A December clothing drive held by an Oshawa boutique and William Little of Whitby has been described as "extremely suc- cessful." The program, called Kits Kares for Kids, was held by Kits Children's Boutique in conijun- ction with Little, of Marketing & Motivation Ltd. Clean used clothig was dropped off at the store and later distributed to needy children in Durham Region by the Seventh Day Ad- ventist College Park community services organization. The program drew clothing from ail over Durham Region, including Whitby, Bowmanville, Ajax and Port Perry, said Little. He said many items were drop- ped off at his Whitby office from people who were unable to get to Oshawa. Nada Pajtak of Bowmanville won a white mink jacket in a draw held for those who brought in clothing. The. chldren's jacket, offered by the boutique, is valued at $1,100. Whitby has set aside $10,000 a year to assist community groups with p rojects that benefit the entire commuiiity. In previous years, groups have ap- proached the Town for financial assistance but there was neyer a policy in ,place with a set of guidelines to follow. On Monday night, couneil appreved J that policy. Under the pohcey, an organization must sut>- mit a written request te the Town i sufficient time for the Town te' make provision i the following year's budget. Included in the request should be. a description of costs and the project and evidence that the organization has funds available. The parks and recreation department will then look* at the or flot it benefits the community, then discuss how the costs wil be shared. Requests will -be limited to one group per year. However, if any funds are available af-* ter the municipal fiscal year end on Oct. 31, groups may approach the Town with a second reqtiest. A maximum of $20,O worth of projects will be considered per year with the Town budgeting $10,000 for its share. "We don't know how this' policy will be received," said parks and recreation director, Larry Morrew, at last week's operatiens comniittee session. "If six groups ap- proach us with projects valued at $3,000 each, then we're ini great shape. But if six groups propose $50,000 then we have a problem," said Morrow. Under the policy, requests will be treated on a first corne, first serve basis. The first group to reeive assistance be' the' Whitby Little Theatre.
