The argument given by councillors Tom Edwar- ds and Ross Batten, operations committee mem- bers, for originally turning down the deputation was that such awareness is a regianal mnatter. Yes, it Is, and rnuch more. So is it nat also local? The group, made Up of about 50 members, mostly f rom Whitby, Bowmanville and Ajax and af- f iliated with the Nuclear Awareness Project based in Toronto, is opposed ta Ontario Hydro's plan ta, transport radioactive heavy water on Highway 401. As for groups such as'Durham Nuclear Awareness, their protests elicit assurances of safety and precautionary measures from Hydro about local nuclear operations - assurances that the public likes ta hear. And why did two councillors prefer ta pass on the matter as it was a reg onal concern? I have read numerous articles on Sunday openings and the Supreme Court's decision on the above' matter and I would like to set the record straight. It has been stated that the only reason stores stay open on Sundays is greed. This is false. I have a business that has broke even over a three- year period. With Sun- day closings, instead of breaking even, I will now lose $60,000 a year. This is what the loss of one day's opening means to myself and my family. So after I have gone bankrupt my next move wil be to inform my staff that they no longer have jobs. Some of my staff will find jobs but some will colleet unem- ployinent insurance at the taxpayers' expense. It has been stated that Sunday is a family day. If su, why do we allow gas stations, convenien- ce stores and produce markets to open? You mean the do-gooders opposed to Sunday openings have neyer Thanlks for gifts To the Editor: on bebalf of the patients, staff and volunteers at Whitby Psychiatric Hospital, I would like to thank all those in the community who responded to our request for Christmas gifts for our patients. The contmnued support and interest of the communty contributes greatly to rehabilitation in the hospital. A special thank you to your newspaper for printing the article regarding Christmas gifts for Whitby Psychietric Hospital. All the best in the New Year.
