PAGE 9, WHITBY FREE PRESS, WEDNESDAY, JANUARY 28, 1987 Learn how to ideo tape a wedin For the lliiiy of the bride or groom a wedding is a "once-in-a-lifctime' event. Even if it's the second time around, the thrill is the sarine. Only a videotape of the ccremony, the mo- ments 'lcading up to it and the recep- tion can capture the emotion of the event. But the only way to do this is to create a.visually intcresting tape. it requires some special preparation. Bob Bumnett, one of the home videotaping experts at 3M reconinends the fol- lowing: Write a shooting script on a piece of paper and stick to it. A shooting script 'outlines thec kinds of shots you want to shoot. For instance, there are threc basic "shots": thc long shot, thec mcdi- um shot and the close-up. By mixing them up and not using thc same one over and over you'll be creating a tape that is visually exciting. A sample shooting script might include thc fol- lowing: 1. The Long Shot - Consider Uiat the long shot is used to csta'blish Uic action about totake place. It sets Uic scene for thc action Uiat follows. So, you might begin taping thc ceremony with',a long shot of Uic church or hotel where thc ceremony will take place. IfUihe wedding is outdoors, begin with a long shot of Uic gucsts waiting for the ceremony to begin. 2. The Medium Shot - The next ihot you f-rme could be a medium ihot of Uic groom waiting wiUi his bcst man for the bride to arrive and the procession to begin. The medium shot fr-ames the subject from the waist Up, and conveys more spccific informnation about the subject and the'background. 3. The Close-Up - The close-up'is framed so the head and shoulders of the subject wil appear in the view- finder. It actslike an optical window to the ýsoul. So, as the procession moves up the aisie, get a close-up of your child's face. You'll see the anxie- ty and the pure dclighted wonder of someone ready to make perhaps the greatest commitment of his or hier life. 4. 2nd Medium Shot - The fourth shot might be a medium shot of the mother of the bride or the father of the groom, pcrhapsý wiping away a happy tear. 5. 2nd Close-Up - Aftcr the last shot, try cutting to a close-up of your child as hie or she waIks down the aisie. Be sure, if you're the mother or Flther of the groom, to get plenty of similar shots of the, bride. Look at hier re- sponse: grave dignity, cuphoria, etc. This kind of cutting, where one action gives away to another, is called cross- cutting. It sets up a certain amount of visual tension that will make your wed- ding tape interésting as well as lull of emotion. The most common technical prob- lem you may-rmn into if you're shoot-, ing outdoors is a back)it situation. For instance, if youi daughtcr is accepting the ring at a low rail or in a group sil- houetted against a brig ht noonday sun, when you look through the viewfinder, you will see the wedding party as a very dark, indistinct image. Why? Be- cause the vidcam's automatic metering systcm Will expose for the brightest part of the scene, the bright noonday suni. The lens will stop or close down and you will wind up With a perfcctly exposed picture of the sky, while your child remains dark in the foreground. To correct fbr a backlit situation, ex- pose manually. Disengage the vidcam's automatic iris control. Then open the lens manually whilc looking through the finder, until you sec the brightest image possible of your child taking the ring. The background will get lighter, but your child, the most important as- pect, will be correctly exposed. If you'rc shooting an indoor ceremo- ny, you'll run into the opposite prob- lem: not enough light to get a good exposure in a dimfly lit church. To cor- rect this difficult lighting situation do three things: Offering you TRADITIONAL ROMANTIC BRU DAL FASHIONS for Brides, Attendants and Mothers. Use a good, light sensitive video- tape, like Scotch's EXG '1420,Beta or VHS cassettes. 3. If the minister, pricst or rabbi will allow it, attach a top-motlnting light to your vidcam. This wil provîde more than cnough light for most shots. t IThe Master Chef Foods and Catering Services of Whitby Prof essional eaterinâg for.al occasions e Dances *Anniversaries e Banquets w Cocktail parties e Businesses e Conventions a Weddlngs e Christmas parties In your Office or Hall Hot and Cold Buffets Free Consultation WE TAKE CARE 0 F EVERYTHING.
