PAGEg, WHITBY FREE PRESS, WEDNESDAY, JANUARY 28,1987 The hall's been reserved, the flow- ers ordered, gowns fitted and limos rented. The last thing to do is make an appointment to have your hair and makeup done on the morning of your wedding. Right? "Wrong!" says New York hairstylist Charles Nicholas. "The biggest mis- take a bride can make is to wait until the last minute to decide on her wed- ding day hairdo and then'end up with a style radically different from her ev- ery day look. For instance: If a girl has straight bangs and hair all one length, she shouldn't suddenly have a mass of curis on hr wedding day. People won't recognize her. It's more important to be yourself rather than an actress wear- ing a wedding gown." No matter what the style, a head of beautiful, healthy hair is essential, but that takes time. 'Two months before the wedding I would start to get my hair in shape," advises Nicholas, who has styled American and European brides forover 20years. "The first step is to select a particularly good sham- pço ard. conditioner system, like Learn bridalbeauty strate Ivory." Recently reformulated, new im- proved Ivory is available in formula- tions for normal, oily, dry or fine hair. Used in tandem, Ivory Shampoo and Conditioner gently clean and condition hair, leavingit soft, manageable and full-of body. "Then arrange a consul- tation with a hairdresser. Have one or two cuts by this person so that the two of you can gauge exactly when you should have your last cut. Notice how soon after a perm, chemical straight- ening or cut you like your hair best, then time your final visit accordingly." The veil is an important factor when choosing a wedding day hairstyle. '"The hair should never interrupt the delicate flow of the veil," says Nich- olas. "Also important is the height of the groom. We don't want a hairstyle and headpiece that makes the bride taller than the groom." To prevent your veil or headpiece from falling out of place, try this trick from Nicholas: Make an old fashioned pincurl with a small lock of hair where you're going to attach the ornament. Cross two hairpins to hold the curl in The Perfect Wedding begins at (vgJç q5facx,- We have a wide range of TUXEDO RENTALS Visit our Bridal Department where you'll find formal wear for the whole Wedding Party: bridal gowns, hed pleces, bridal hats... *ven gartwe. Then tuck the veil or headpiece's supportive comb inside the curl which acts as an anchor. It'll support your headpiece throughout the day, leaving you free to dance the night away! Besides getting your hair in shape, you'll want to be sure to feel fresh all day and into the evening. You can start preparing a week or two before your wedding by applying an effective anti- perspirant like Secret every night and again every morning. Anti-perspirants have a cumulative effect for up to two weeks, so the earlier you start within this timetable, the drier you'll be. Secret now comes in both round and wide solids plus a new powder-fresh scent to help keep you feeling especial- ly fresh on the big day. For your wedding day, choose and apply your makeup with extra care. Try for the overall effect of a roman-. tic, sculpted look - high cheekbones against softly hollowed cheeks and full, sensuous lips. Choose a base that is ies slightly lighter than your skin tone since perspiration and oils will cause it to darken as the wedding day goes on, and always blend into the hairline and onto the neck. Next, use a darker. blush for shadowing and a lighter color high on your cheeks to bring out and brighten your eyes, the expressive fo- cal point of your face,.especially for photographs. Avoid harsh or vivid colors on your wedding day. Choose eyeshadow, lipstick and blush shades of purple and pink for a softer, prettier effect. You can make your eyes look more dramatic simply by adding a little fullness, arch or length to the eyebrow -with a thin brush. A light dusting of loose pow- der over your entire face will provide an even matte look that will eliminate shininess in photographs. Lastly, pat your face lightly with a dampened sponge or cotton ball - your makeup will look more natural and stay fresh longer. The origin of wedding traditions The Bridal Shower At one time, marriage was a business proposition between parents of the bride and groom. Love was not important. What was? The price the groom's family paid for the bride and the size of the bride's dowry. The first shower? A poor Dutch miller fell in love with a maiden whose father forbade the match and refused to provide a dowry. The miller's friends came to the rescue and showered the bride-to-be with enough gifts in order to start housekeeping. Want to make shower-shopping easy for your friends? The Honeymoon The first marriages were by capture, not choice. When-early man felt it was time to take a bride, he carried off an unwilling woman to a secret place where her relatives wouldn't find them. While the moon went through all its phases - about 30 days - they hid from the searchers and drank a brew made from honey. Hence, we get the word honeymoon, now meaning a roman- tic trip like the one you-and your groom will take after your wedding. If you two want to find out where the pink sand beaches and blue crystal waters are, which places tuck¯themselves in at sunset, which swing till dawn, just ask your travel agent. He'll help you both plan a perfect dreamy honeymoon you'll love. Mercantile Department Store FASHION CLOTHIERS "Quallty nd Service for over 50 years" SYD SILVER FormaiWear 668-3468 321 BROCK ST. S.
