Initially, littie was known about strokes, but as the resuits of research unfolded, the relationship between heart disease and stroke has become more evident. In fact, in recent years advances in diagnostic ability, the study of risk factors, as well as promising new forms of therapy, have been made in the area of stroke. Realizing the similarities of cause between heart disease and stroke and the need for more vital research, the following mission statement has been adopted by the foundation - the purpose of the foundation is to provide funding appropriate for research and education to reduce death and disability from cardiovascular (heart) and cerebrovascular (stroke) disease. " The name of the Foun- dation bas been changed to Heart and Stroke Foundation of Ontario." The new emphasis will refleet the visions of the past and the future directions of the foun- dation. It will also demonstrate our in- volvement to produce a new approach to raising more money, to produce more resear- ch, that wil ultimately save more lives. February is heart Month.
