Composer 'visits Henry Street 111gb Instrumental music students at Henry Street High Sehool were treated last Friday to a day of ini- struction with one of the top com- posers in the United States, Jim Curnow. "He bas an incredible knack for interpretation," Bill Holloway, 0of Oshawa's Salvation Armny Temple Corps, said of, Curnow during his visit to Henry and other Durham Region high schools. Curnow has taught in ail areas of instru mental music - five years at the public school level and 15 at the college-university level. He received the "Outstanding Educator of America" award in 1974 and a citation for excellence from the National Band Association in 1980. He has won several awards for band compositions and for his con- tributions to American band literature. He has more than 200 published works. He is a resident of Stone Moun- tain, Georgia, where he composes and arranges fuli-time. PAW will sponsor animal logo contest The Pickering, Ajax, Whitby (PAW) Animal Control committee will sponsor a logo design contest ini an effort to promote better under- standing of animal control and problems in the three municipalities. The contest will be judged during the second week of May.. PAW will be asking the three municipalities1 to proclaim that week as Animal Control Awareness Week. During the week, residents will be urged to neuter and spay their pets as well as vaccinate them ifor rabies. But the mpain focus on the week will be the logo contest. During March, residents of the three towns wili, be invited to design a logofor the animal control centre located on Thickcson Rd. N. in Whit- by. The logo will be required to have a maximum diýnension of eight in- ches, be one color, or black and be printed on white or 'ligbt-colored paper.. Each entry must contain the name Pickering, Ajax, Whitby animal control centre or use the"- acronym PAW. Entries must be submitted no later than Marci 31, to Town clerk Don McKay at the Whitby* municipal building on Rossland Rd. E. The winner of the contest, to be announced during animal awareness week, will receive a plaque and $100.
