PAGE 16, WHITBY FREE PRESS, WEDNESDAY, MARCH 18,1987 w SPORTS Atoms lead semi-inal Brooklin-Whitby minor atoms have moved to within one game of an Ontario final berth with two vic- tories over Wexford on the weekend. Whitby managed to overcome hot goaltending by Wexford's Steven Schzit in the first game Saturday to pull out a 3-2 win. On Sunday, Whitby dominated throughout for a 5-1 victory and a 4- 0 lead in the six-point series that was scheduled to resume at 7 p.m. on Thursday this week in Brooklin. On Saturday,* Wexford took a 2-0 lead into the third period but Whit- by finally managed to beat Schzit to tie the game in regulation and send the contest into overtime. Wayne Primeau scored the third period goals for Whitby. Derek Young and Paul Dillon set him up for the first while Young and Andre Marois assisted on the second. In overtime, Jimmy Brown scored on a play froin Craig Talent after 1:29 of overtime for the win. Coach Brian Dillon said Whitby goalie Stephen St. Amand was out- standing in the game. The - consensus among salmon anglers residing east of Scar- borough is that the Ministry of Natural Resources' annual stocking of coho and chinook salmon in Lake Ontario is unfair. Since salmon were introduced to lake Ontario in the late 1960s, the majority of plantings have taken place in the lake's western basin. With the exception of a couple of chinook plantings in the Ganaraska River, back in 1971, and Shelter Valley Creek, in 1972, there have béen no further salmon stockings east of Port Credit. In trying to procure salmon for the eastern basin of Lake Ontario, a task group consisting of seven angling associations shad discussions recently with Ministry of Natural Resources represen- tatives in Bowmanville. Included in the task group were representatives from the Durham Region Anglers' Association, Cen- tral Lake Ontario Sportsmen's Association, Bowmanville Creek Anglers' Association, Ontario Skaags still in first place Skaags rolled over Jensen's Auto Body 9-1 to maintain its hold on first place with three weeks left in the Wednesday Night Dart League season. Dodd & Souter kept pace with a 9- 1 win over JMS Communications. Dodd & Souter remains in second, five behind Skaags. JMS is in third, nine points ahead of last-place Jenseñ's which has suffered a late season crash. "He always comes up with the key saves," said Dillon. - Dillon said both teams played better hockey on Sunday, but more open play proved to Whitby's ad- . vantage. Primeau started the scoring in the first period, Jeff Montaigue and Jon Racicot assisting. .Marois, on a play from Brown, made it 2-0 in the second period before Wexford replied. Paul Brooks made it 3-1 from Primeau and Brown to end second- period scoring. Primeau got his second, assisted by Dillon and Brooks, while Marois picked up his second goal, from Brown, to complete scoring in the third. St. Amand and Jamie Hogel shared netminding duties andboth were solid, said Dillon. The coach says Wexford is not as well-balanced a team as the Belleville team Whitby faced in the quarter-final. Whitby managed to win the quar- ter-final but Dillon said the series "could have gone either way." Charter Boat Association, Bluffer's Park Anglers' Association, Nor- thumberland Anglers' Association and Scarborough Charter Boat Association. Concerned members- included charter boat operators, avid anglers and local merchants. AI Lord, a charter boat operator at Whitby harbor, told The Free Press that salmon stockings in the eastern part of the lake would ex- tend what is now a short season for the prize fish and thus help tourism. Chinook salmon is the "glory fish" for anglers, said Lord, who belongs to the Durham Anglers and is a member of the board of direc- -tors of the Ontario Chartered Boat Association. "We want the stocking evened out," he said. He explained that the "ideal situation" would be to have the United States put some of their salmon on this side. But he admit- ted that would be a subject of negotiation between the Ministry of Natural Resources and the U.S. Lord said the U.S. now stocks "millions more fish than we do". Fishing overall is now "phenomenal" in this part of Lake Ontario during the season which peaks in July and August, accor- ding to Lord, one of about a dozen charter boat operators at Whitby harbor, five of them association members. Lake trout are making a comeback after successful measures to kill off the lamprey. There are also plans down the road to stock Atlantic salmon in this area. The fish were once natural here but were killed by lamprey and inadequate spawning grounds. SEE PAGE 1 7 WHITBY MINOR ATOM GOALIE ford player.
