Leigh Willems, placed first among seven-year-olds in the event held at the Etobicoke Olympium, March 14. He won ail four of his matches, each agaist a competitor fromn the United States. He defeated Adam Manciofle of Connecticut, to dlaim first prize in the kumite (sparring) category. Kumite is a form of freestyle fighting, where points are gained by makig contact above the op- ponenit's waist. Fighters wear pads on their feet and hands while competing, with two points being needed for a vie- tory. He trains at the Ajax, Rim's Tae-Kwon-Do studio and has been involved i the sport since he was 5. Now the holder of a red beit, he is expected to reach black beit status by the time he is 9. He also placed first in a warm-up tournament in Caledon the weekend before the Canadiati nationals. Ris next scheduled tournament is this May in Montreal. Whitby's junior B ringette teamn won the gold medal i the regional championships held at Enmismore arena March 13-15. Leanne Muir had four goals and two assists while Christine Smith scored five goals as Whitby rolled by Oshawa 12-5 in the first game. Stacy Guymerhad a goal and four assists while Jennifer Cooper scored twice and also had four assists. Cooper scored three goals and Guymer had the other two goals in a 5-4 win over Port Perry to send Whitby to the final. Muir scored three times and Cooper twice as Whitby again edged Port Perry 5-4 i the cham- pionship. Cooper also had two assists. Whitby belles won the silver medal ini the regional event, fallig to Oshawa 7-5 I the final. Whitby had earlier defeated Oshawa i the playdowns 7-3. - Wbitby got three goals from both Mary Lou Spencer and Leanne Ellis to defeat Sunderland 8-7 in the openlng game. Susan Marshall and Paulafl8arrack had singles. Ells and Barrack each score. three goals in the 7-3 win over Oshawa. Spencer had the other goal.
