Two of them, Thunderbird on Myrtie Rd. and Country Lane, on Taunton Rd. W. opened this past weekend, while Winches ter, on Winchester Rd. has been open since March 21. "We had to close the week of the 7th because of the snow but we are back open," says Winchester'Lyolf pro Jerry Nemish. This will be Nemish's first year as the pro after being the associate pro at the Oshawa Golf Club for eight years. Nemish says the game is growing in popularity. "There is no doubt, golf is growing in the area. The existing courses are busting at the seams," he says. Bull Diggins, owner of Country Lane agrees. "It is definitely a growing game. We seem to be busy ail the time," he says. Thunderbird owner Wilson Pat- terson believes the game isn't just growing in popuiarity with existing residents, but new people coming in to the area bave helped to increase gof 's popuiarity. "We are growing from the point of view that more people> are moving into the area. There are more people piaying golf per capita now than ever before," says Pat- terson. 1987 will be a special year for Patterson and Thunderbird, a par- 72 course, as it marks the 25th an- niversary for the semi-private club. Thunderbird will again this year. host the Canadian Tour- nament Players Division (TPD), a quaiifying tournament for golfers to participate on the Canadian Tour. "We had 60 entries for the TPD last year and this year we expeet between 100 and 150 entries," says Patterson. This year, the tournament wil take place during the last week of May. The club wiil also be the site of at least three local celebrity/amateur tournaments. The growth of the game bas become so evident to some, that the owners of Winchester have begun construction of a fourth golf course in Whitby. Located at Durham Rd. 23 and Brawley Rd., it will be called Lakeridge Links and will measure 6,800 yards. Nemish says it should be ready to, play by the end of 1988. Cham pionships were good experience: ringette coach Whitby tween B's didn't win a game but coach Bob Weckman says his ringette team gained vahuable experience in the provincial B championships held April 2-5. "Our girls participated with spirit and sportsmanship and although they didn't win any trophies they were stili winners," he said. Whitby lost 8-2 to Pickering, 7-1 to Glouces ter, 8-0 to St. Catherines, il- 2 to Kitchener, 12-6 to Sudbury and 6-3 to Valley East. Tobi Wood had seven goals for Whitby in the tournament. Marathoners choo'se, Whitby A marathon, of a different sort, will be held in Whitby this summer. The Marathoners ' Bahl Tour- nament for Muscular. Dystrophy, at Iroquois Park from June 8 to 13 has been approved by council. The Marathoners are 10 bal players and 35 behind-the-scefles people who will hold a round-the- dlock tournament, complete with beer tent and casino. Funds from the event will be donated to' fight muscular' dystrophy.' Last year, the Marathoners held their tournament in Scarborough. However, the field did flot have iighting to accom- modate play during the night hours.. Lighting was installed at con-. siderable expense. That year the group raised ap-' proximateiy $20,000 with $6,700 donated to the Birchmount Centre for the mentally handicapped. The Marathoners then began iooking for a permanent site, and chose Iroquois Park. .This year, the group will* be at- tempting to play for 110 hours straight, breaking their own record' of 100 hours. That 100 hours is recognized by the Guinness Book of World Records. As well, local organizations wiii be'asked to assist in the évent. Local teams, service clubs, media, industry and government will ahl be challenged by the Marathoners.
