CLAIR AVE. E., ORONTO, ONTARIO M4T 2S5.I letter from Colleen and Mark Flewelling of the. committee, one of two organized by the Palmerston Parents Association. At last week's meeting at Thor- nton to outine plans for the new Kendalwood area school,' Whitby trustee Patty Bowman urged parents tormakç,their case before the' property and transportation committee of the Durham Board of Education. 1She said she would walk the route across Thickson Rd. "to physlcally see what you're talking about," but pointed out that a delegation before the board , with a document of con- cerns, would be the best method to try and obtain buses. Bowman said she expected to "lhear soon"' fromn the Town of Whitby. about a crossing guard for Thickson Rd. The ward represen- tative for the area, councillor Joe Drum m, bas asked for a recount on transportation along Thickson Rd., according to one parent, to deter- mine what is warranted. "It's too busy 'for a crossing guard,"' said Cathy Rowell, of thé Thornton Home and School Association. Jack Upton, manager of tran- sportation for the board, said the Town bas been "looking ,at" crossing guards and traffie lights at Burnis St. and Thickson Rd. S. He also pointed out that tbe board went "on record" seven years ago about the potential traffic problem SEE PAGE 26 be faced by crossing guards if they were, placed at a Thickson* Rd. location. "I would not send. my child directly...across Thickson Rd. "I think there should be a bus - it's the only safe answer," said the parent, -who received loud applause from the 150 parents attending the meeting at Dr. Robert Thorntofl Public School. A committee of Palmerston Public School parents bas also asked trustees to join in the "physîcal experience" of a walk with Gr. 2-3 students from Ivanie Court (south of Manning Rd. and east of Brock St. N.) to Whitby Senior Public School. The school will become a kindergarten to Gr. 8 fadiity in September. The - parents' committee, established to look ai transpor- tation needs east of Brock St., says the boundary change will mean a walk of more than two kilometres for students from Ivanic Court to the senior school (to be renamed) located north of Dundas St. E. and west of Garden.St. "Most of our young children are not allowed off their own streets, let alone walk two or even one kilometre on their own," states a No. Tbat's the answer from Whitby council to a group of parents who want an adult crossing guard at the CPR tracks on Garden St. The arents asked for the guard after Iearning that the Durham Board of Education is changing Whitby Senior Public School from a Grade 7 and 8 school to a school that will accommodate kindergarten through Grade 8. As well, the parents note that the board has cancelled busing for students who live within 1.6 kilometres of a school. "Naturally the parents are con- cerned for the safety of the children, particularly the primary students," says a letter from Catherine Hyde on behaif of the parents. "We would assume that those primary children who are of kmn- dergarten age and even the early primary grades would not be per- mitted to walk to sehool alone," states a report from the public works de part ment. The refusai is also based on two separate counts the department did on trains that travèled on the tracks during, before and after school hours. When the Town was requesting short armn gates for the crossmng in 1985 a train count showed that only three trains were on the -tracks from 7:30 a.m. to 5 pm. .Another count later showed that no trains were on the track from 8: 30 a.m. to 3:55 p.m. Staff also pointed out that gates will be installed this year. They noted that trains also must blow their whistles before entering the area. The Town has recommended that if an y type of guard is required it could be a student school patrol guard. Their dut y would be to hold children back when a train is in the vicini'ty. The Town decided that two aduit crossing guards would have been required at the tracks and -would have cost the Town $9,000. During discussion on the issue, councillor Joe Drumm asked for an updated traffie count on Thickson Rd. to see if an aduit crossing guard would be warranted at Thickson and Bellwood. "I have been getting a lot of cails on this," said Drumm. A new school'will be buiît off Bellwood Drive. 0 DOMINION-- L STORES !JrMI TED (DOMGROUP) EM[PLOYEES C ross sig guard-rej ected Student accommodation for Kendalwood area is decided Whitby Urgent Care A WaIk in Clinic NOW OPEN at 127 Perry Street, Whitby behind the Post Office Hours: Mon. - Fr1. 6:30 p.m. - 10:30 p.m. Holidays, Sat. & Sun. 10:30 a.m. - 10:30.p.m. 668-5872 ANNOU NCEMENT DR.
