That is the message the Ontario Chiropractie Association wants to get across to the public. And in an effort- to get that message across, May 1-7 has been dedicated as Spinal Health Week across Canada by the chiropractic profession. "We feel that the spine is one im- portant part of our bodies that we too often take for'granted. Only if we are having spinal related problems do we remember we have one,"P says Gregory McConnell, a Whitby chiropractor âà nd a representative of the Durham Region Chiropractic Society. McConnell brought a replica of the spine to a Grade 3 class at Col. J.E. Farewell, last week, giving the students a dloser look at its fun- ction. The society says good exercise habits contribute to a strong and flexible spine. . But good resting habits are-also important. For instance, when sit- ting, don't slouch. "Instead, sit in a comfortable chair with your back against the back rest and place your feet com- fortably on the floor. Don't cross your legs," says the society. Also, when sleeping, lie either on your back or your side, not'on your stomach. The society also recom- mends your neck be supported. "Sufficient fluid intake is also very important - six to eight glasses of water per day are recommen- ded," says the society. ,The spine is made of 24 littie bones - vertebrae cushioned by disks which act as shock absorberâ, protecting the vertebrae. The ver- tebrae in turn, proteet the spinal cord. This is the second year of a five- year spinal *ealth awareness program begun by the Durhami society. CRAIG LANEGGER, a Gr. 6 studentý at-I Col, J.E.
