Se WHITBY 666-6759 By DONNA DONALDSON "When leasing a car, people should be .as cautious as buying," says Jim Haines, sales- represen- tative for Marigold. Lincoin/Mer- cury Sales, Whitby.,, Robert Bennett of King Var Chrysier in Oshawa agrees. "Before leasing, people should shop around and compare prices. have the salesman sit down and work payments out as if purchasing the vehicle and then as leasing. Compare buying versus leasing." A leasing agreement is a contract and once signed by the lessee and the dealership, both are obligated to comply' with the arrangements agreed upon. .Bennett said people are going in- to leases because there is little money inivested (in most cases, fir- st 'and hast monith lease payment) and they have the option to buy at the end of the lease. "At the end of the lease, some peophe'are in a. better -position financially to buy," says Ralph Buchan, assistant sales manager for Pickering Hyundai.. Leasing contracts range from one to five-year leases, with, three or four-year leases being more popular. Buchan said the five-year heases are usually for more expen- sive vehicles such as a BMW or Mercedes.. By MIKE JOHNSTON Phil Caînan opened the Pickering Hyundai dealérship at 220 Bayly St.. in Ajax two and a haîf years ago. He has neyer looked back. "I took over a Volkswagen dealership that was here which also had the name Pickéring in it,. 50 I decided to kcep that name," says Cainan. Since then, Caînan says the dealership has built up an excellent service department that attracts customers from as far away as Cobourg and Toronto. He says Canadians have been buying the Ifyundai cars because "lyou can buy a new car for the, price of a used car." Calnan says the Hyundai Pony Leasing bas some advantages. Some people can write it off for business purposes. Others find it is less rnoney invested-initially in the down payment to that of buying, and the monthly payments can be lower. Some people like to switch their leased cars,,,, regularly, and sometimes there is a cost involved in doing so. At the end of the lease the lessee has the option to buy the car at the amount agreed- upon in theý con- tract, or they cap return it. When returning the. car, the dealership requires the car to be in the same condition as when it was leased. Normal wear -and tear is acceptable, but the lessee is liable for any damage or abuse, and tires must pass governhnent inspection. Most companies have mleage limitations .which is covered ini the, lease. If the lessee exceeds this limitation,' he wil be charged a fee s0 much per kilometer over the prescribed level. .The lessee is responsible for all servicing required-on the car in the duration of the leasing agreement. Bennett. says soine companies have a maintenance lease, but it's becoming a thing of the past;« "Basically, shop around. It's a competitive market, so it's wise to go out and get two or three prices and compare interest rates," he says. has been selling well because people like driving cars that still have rear-wheel drive. 1 For those that enjoy a front- wheel drive car, Caînan says Hyundai offers the Excel. "Hyundais are good dependable cars that get you from A to B. " As in ail areas of Durham Region, Ajax is growing at a phen- omenal rate. To keep up with that growth, Caînan says his dealership will have to grow with the town. "I ca n see the dealership growing in the next few years, " he says. 1Another reason why Calnan's dealership is so successful is the employees, he says. "I have reahly good local people working here" says Caînan. Growth expected at car. dealership mmud lei mê
