Anderson wins LOSSA Two of the three Anderson Collegiate rugby teams were suc- cessful in winning gold medals at the Lake Ontario Secondary Schools (LOSSA) championships held in Whitby this week. The midget squad, coached by Jim Nawrot and Mike Agget finished in second place after their regular season schedule and beat Dunbarton 10-4 in the semi-final playdown to make it into LOSSA. The question was could the under- dog Raiders win against the un- defeated tean from Pickering? Nerves were evident during the first part of the final game as kicker Joe Iantomasi missed on two penalty kicks. Pickering then got on the scoreboard first with a penalty kick to take a 3-0 lead, a lead that stood up through most of the game. With five minutes left on the clock, Steve Devine chased a loose kick down the field and kept drib- ble-kicking it towards the Pickering goal before he ran over for the try, which was converted by lantomasi. The 6-3- victory and LOSSA championship earned the midgets a place in the Durham York Secon- dary School (DYSSAA) champion- shins slated for Fletchers Fields in Toronto on Wednesday. If suc- cessful there, the team will go to the Ontario Championship on Saturday. Nawrot- was thrilled with his team's win, stating all the players but two were new to the game this year. "We've got the best midget team I've ever seen at Anderson and the great thing is most of these lads will be around for another four years" he beamed. Thursday saw the squad travel to Peterborough for the league opener with arch rival Lakers. It was wor- th the drive as Redmen came home with an 8-5 victory under their belts. Redmen had a 2-1 advantage at the end of the first period and built their lead to 6-4 at the end of 40 minutes of play. Gil Nieuwendyk finished off the night with a pair of goals and two assists. Tom Wreggitt followed close behind with a goal and three assists witn Andy Perroni, Derek Keenan, John Reed, Dale Kernohan and Jeff Garlin rounding off the scoring. Lacrosse Association (OLA) Red- men was on Saturday night and they rose to the occasion by whip- ping Orangeville Northmen 24-8 at Luther Vipond Memorial Arena. The experience and deter- mination of veteran Ken Colley showed as he racked up four goals for the night. Redmen opened up a 3-0 lead before Orangeville rallied for two markers to close the opening frame only one goal behind. But enough was enough for the hometown team as they hit for a trio of goals early in the centre period. By the time the game was half over, Redmen had built up a 12-5 advantage and Northmen saw fit to yank starting goalie Jim McMahon in favor of Bob Clevely. It was to no avail as Redmen pumped in another dozen goals before the night was over. John Reed, formerly a brilliant junior player who hung up his lacrosse stick for 10 years, showed he still had the stuff with a three- goal effort. John Fusco, Paul St. John, Eric and Andy Perroni and Nieuwendyk each tallied a pair of goals. Hitting for singles were Emil Labaj, Brian Colm, Randy Gallas, Wreggitt and Blaine Harrison, who is back in action after a four-year hiatus in Ohio.
