WHITBY FREE PRESS, WEDNESDAY, MAY 27.1987, PAGE 27 G WHIE RA By muIAN WINTER With a steadily increasing num- ber of new residents moving into our community, the Whitby General Hospital is faced with the necessity of informing them that there is a modern up-to-date hospital right in their new hometown. Making new and old residents aware of the hospital and its facilities is the responsibility of the public relations committee of the board of governors, headed by for- mer Whitby Mayor Jim Gartshore. A resident of Whitby for 40 years, Gartshore has a background in sales and marketing. After three years on the board, he sees a definite need to keep the citizens of Whitby informed of the hospital's facilities and future expansion plans. Gartshore was mayor of Whitby from 1975 to 1980, is a past president of the Whitby Kinsmen Club, past governor of the Association of Kin- smen Clubs and president and fund drive chairman of the Whitby Heart and Stroke Foundation. Other members of the public relations committee are Elizabeth Shepley, Edward Buffett, Don Fleming, Jim Miller and ex-officio member Bill Wallace. A resident of Whitby for 11 years, Elizabeth Shepley is a homemaker and former school teacher who has served on the board for one year. In her second year as president of the Hospital Auxiliary, her main duty is to act as liaison between the auxiliary and the board. For four years she was volunteer co-ordinator at the hospital, in charge of the volunteers (ages 14 to 19) who assist the nurses with patient care. Edward Buffett, a 15-year resi- dent of Whitby, is a principal in Buffett Taylor and Associates Ltd., a benefit, pension and actuarial consulting firm, and is also a prin- cipal in B.T.A. Benefit Plan Ad- ministrators Inc. He is well known in Whitby for his work as chairman of the Whitby Downtown Business Improvement Area board which recently arranged for Whitby's downtown to be included in Heritage Canada's Main Street program. Jim Miller has been executive director of the Whitby General Hospital since 1984 and has been in hospital administration since 1969. He is a bachelor of health service administration and a certified member of the Canadian College of Health Service Executives. Donald Fleming, president of Fleming Realty in Toronto, has lived in Whitby for 54 years and is an eight-year member of the hospital board. The public relations committee has undertaken an active program to promote the Whitby General Hospital to the community. This column in the Whitby Free Press, which started on April 1, 1987, was suggested to the board by the public relations committee to inform Whitby residents of what facilities the hospital offers and wbo are the people that operate the bospital. The committee is planning to up- date the bospital's directory of ser- vices, whicb is at least six years old and is ini need of revision. Plans are under way to provide speakers who can describe the aims and objectives of the hospital to service clubs, church groups and other community organizations. The recent change of the bospital's name to Wbitby General Hospital from Dr. J.O. Ruddy General Hospital, was suggested by the public relations committee to make new residents more aware that tbere is a hospital in Whitby. On June 4, through the efforts of the public relations committee, there will be a recognition evening for the members of the Hospital Auxiliary, at the Thunderbird Golf and Country Club. According to Gartshore, the work of the public relations committee has paid off for there has been a considerable increase in use of the Whitby General Hospital over the past year. ELIZABETH SHEPLEY Plans will be underway soon to develop a scheme for donor recognition plaques, and a plaque is being prepared to be mounted with the portrait of Dr. Joseph O.
