PAGE 20, WHITBY FREE PRESS, WEDNESDAY, JUNE 3,1987 Redmen trounce Owen Sound 20-11 When you're hot, you're hot...or so the saying goes. And Brooklin Redmen are off to a hot start as they make it four wins in as many games. The latest notch in their belt was a 20-11 victory over Owen Sound North Stars in Ontario Lacrosse Association (OLA) action at Luther Vipond Memorial Arena on Satur- day night. Derek Keenan and John Fusco proved to be a two-man wrecking crew with Keenan accounting for four goals and five assists, while Fusco. picked up four goals and three assists. Always known for his prowess between the pipes, Wayne Colley showed a touch of offensive flair as he tallied six assists for the night. Dale Kernohan counted for three goals, Gil Nieuwendyk a pair, Jerry Fitzgerald, Randy Gallas, Eric Perroni, Blaine Harrison, Andy Perroni and newcomer Dave Pirog each a single. Mark Halliwell and Randy Mc- Millen collected three goals each for North Stars. Brian Hall and Mike MeMillan each notched a pair and Bill Laws added a single. Redmen opened the game with four unanswered goals. But their dominance was soon to end as Nor- th Stars rallied for four of their own, including a stellar two-goal performance by Halliwell in a span of 22 seconds. North Stars actually took a 7-6 lead halfway through the centre frame, a first for the Brooklin squad who have never been behind on a score this year till then, but Redmen finished the period up 10-8. Commissioner of Planning final stanza, Redmen hit for 10 goals to finish on top, but their play overall was not impressive. And according to the gesticulations behind the Redmen bench, top honocho Peter Vipond was not exactly thrilled with his club's per- formance either. Dave Pirog could be a great asset to the already strong Redmen team. An intrical part of Bram- pton's junior system, he went on to serve as captain of Excelsiors until they closed down shop recently. Although not a profuse goal scorer, he is noted for his hustle and team play. There is still no sign of Jim Meredith though, who is in Van- couver on a family matter. In an earlier match-up, Redmen trounced Fergus Thistles 14-3 put- ting an end to the Thistles' four- game undefeated streak. The defending Canadian senior President's Cup champions, noted for their speed, were-just no match for Redmen on their smaller home court as Brooklin's defense kept the visitors at bay. Keenan was the man of the hour with an impressive five-goal, two- assist performance. It was the icing on the cake for Keenan who recen- tly graduated from Ithaca College, N.Y. with a bachelor of science and physical education and business degree. Paul St. John and Ken Colley chipped in with two goals each and singles came courtesy of Cal Avison, Fusco, Gallas, Tom Wreggitt and Gil Nieuwendyk, who also potted five assists. Public skating is top recpriority Public skating will be the number one priority for the parks and recreation department as they allocate ice time for the winter of 1987/1988. The Town currently has no existing policy on how it distributes ice time. "It is important we establish a policy now that we have a third ice pad," Larry Morrow, director of parks and recreation told operations committee members .Monday night. The committee ap- proved the policy which now goes to council on Monday for approval. Next in line for ice time would be special events or programs held at times to serve the majority of Whitby residents. The department would then give the next available ice times, up un- til 10 p.m. weekly, to major clubs/team sports and children and. youth groups. Aduit organized and non- organized sport organizations would be given first priority for ice time after 10 p.m. weekly. Should council approve the policy, the department will im- mediately begin drawing up a schedule for the ice. Warriors win 4th in overtime THE REGIONAL MUNICIPALITY OF DURHAM PUBLIC NOTICE
