PAGE 20, WHITBY FREE PRESS, WEDNESDAY, JUNE 10,-1987 SPORTS Strong second overall in Rome Lori Strong of Whitby placed second overal at the Grand Prix of Rome gymnastics competition held last Wednesday, Thursday and Friday in Rome, Italy. But more importantly, sne ac- complished what she set out to do - become known in Europe. "If the judges get to know you, you may bet a higher score from them," said Strong. Strong, 14, placed first on the vault with a score of 9.825 of a possible 10 points and placed second on the beam, bars and floor exercises. The competition had a different format to what Strong is ac- customed. On the Wednesday, the vault and bar events were held then the vault and bar finals were held. On the Thursday, the beam and floor exercises were held then the finals. Normally events and finals are held on separate days. "It was a bit tiring because on the second day you had to do two floor and two beam events," said Strong, who says she could have done better at the event. Strong placed second to Romanian Aurelia Dobre. DARREN JOHNSTON of the Whitby Thornhill last week. The Whitby team Bantam All-stars steals second base lost this game 5-4.
