WHITBY FREE PRESS, WEDNESDAY, JULY 8,1987, PAGE 15 Ashburn news SCOUTMASTER BILL LAWLER, attending the world jamboree fromthe discusses an upcoming visit to 2nd Brookiin troupe will be Blake Australia with scouts Dan Mink (1) and Jones. Martin Tripp, all from Brooklin. Also Free Press photo Scouts will head Down Under They'll take different routes but a Brooklin scoutmaster and three of his scouts will be attending the world scout jamboree in.Australia just after Christmas this year. The world event is nothing new for scoutmaster Bill Lawler, since he's been to four including the 1963 event in Greece. But it's always on the minds of Dan Mink, Martin Tripp and Blake Jones, members of the 2nd Brookin troupe. "I'm excited and I can't wait...I think about it all the time," says Mink, 14, a chief scout. Tripp, 15, echoes those feelings. About 13,000 scouts are expected to attend the jamboree to be held north of Sydney in a huge park. Tripp says the opportunity to meet people from ail over the world makes the event worthwhile. "And it's the whole spirit of it," adds Mink. "You trade everything you have - you just go for it." i The scouts wil spend a week with a family there and also tour Australia and New Zealand. They'll return Jan. 17. Bicyclists raise $300 for Kinsmen FROM PAGE 14 Fortunately Moor and Reveler had no probiems with their bikes throughout the trip and said, ail in alf; most motorists were con- siderate. They did recall an in- cident which bothered them. Riding along Highway 69 in the French River area, they heard the horn of a transport truck behind them. They waved to let the approacbing driver know they had seen bim and noted there was not traffic coming in the opposite direction. To their dismay, the trucker passed them within a ftw inches, so~nding bis horn all the way. He did not offer to give them an inch and the force of the wind as he passed blew Moor onto the soft shoulders. Angered, both realized it could easily have sucked one of tbem under the wheels of the big rig and still wonder why the driver acted as he did. The two were pleased that the trip was successful, and even more pleased they had raised over $300 for the Kinsmen for use within the community. Will they do it again? With a smile the answer was ... "You just never know." No opposition to Kurz Foods expansion No opposition was made at a publicomeeting last week to a rezoning application by Kurz Foods re. to expand an existing meat plant in Myrtie. The expansion would increase the plant to 1,675 sq. m. from 675 sq. m. Bob Rennie of Baldwin St. asked if the plant would be turned into a slaughter house but councillor Gerry Emm replied the zoning would not permit that type of operation. The expansion was requested to make more room for washrooms, a lunch room and a cooler. Planning department will make a recommendation to administrative committee at a future meeting. Roofing tender is accepted A low tender of $55, 100 by Caldense Roofing and Insulation Ltd. for roof repairs to the Centen- nial building and Spencer com- munity centre has been accepted by operations committee. The tender is $20,700 more than the 1987 budget estimate of $38,000 towards the work. Total cost of the repairs, in- cluding consultant fees and con- tingencies, is $58,700. By ROSE HERON The 120th birthday of Canada was celebrated in Ashburn last wed- nesday afternoon. It all began at the Centennial Centre, around the new Daw- plaque. Then the Fred Daw nature trail was opened. Ken Brown started the proceedings as master of ceremonies for the day. He in- troduced Margaret Davis who paid tribute to the late Fred Daw for his interest and work in the community and the church, and also to wife Lois who has been and still is very involved. Lois Daw cut the ribbon and everyone walked the trail to the big park. Lots of balloons gavé the park a festive look. About 500 people gathered for the games, races, etc. The 'Knobby Knees' contest for the men was a riot and Bill Gardner won that one. There was a 'bulging bicepts' contest for the ladies, Diane Batten and Moyra Griffin stole the show in that one. The lovely Canada cake was made and decorated by Bunny Cox. Several people came who lived and went to school in Ashburn and many old and new friendships were enjoyed. It seems to be the general wish to have another celebration next year. Last Sunday at Burn Church Rev. McEntyre began a series on liberation and bis text was from Luke 9, and titled, "Liberatirn, a Faith without Strain". Hugh Knight sang "Hear to the Heart of God". Next Sunday Lois Powrie, Deaconess with the national office of the WMS, will be guest speaker at the morning service and the men's choir will sing. Each Sunday evening service is being held now at Glen Major Church as 7:30 and Burns Church men's choir will sing next Sunday evening. Don't forget to put any news you would like in our column in the box in the store or phone next week to Florence Ashton.
