WHITBY FREE PRESS, DURHAM MOVES, JULN I,'., îj»si PAGE 23 Obituarje s RONALD HAWKINS Ronald Henry Chartes Hawkins of Ajax died on June 26, 1987 in Oshawa. He was in his Olst year. He was born in London, Engtand on October 17, 1925, son of Frederick and Phyllis (Harper) Hawkins. He married Marjorie on Sept. 6, 1947. In 1963 Mr. Hawkins became a charter member of the St. John Ambulance in Whitby. For three years, he wa superintendent of the ambulance brigade, Corps Superin- tendent for the Durham Region St. John for one year, and chief training officer for the Whitby St. John Ambulance for 14 years. He was the first person to ever teach a first aid course to 15 woman inmates at Whitby Jail. He received a letter from the Ontario Minister of Correctional Services thanking him for his effort. He was a member of the Whitby Centennial board committee in 1967 and was one of the driving forces to get the Centenniat Building on Cen- tre St. S. in Whitby as the centen- nial project for that year. He joined the Whitby fire depar- tmcnt on January 4, 1967 and became a fuil-time member of the department in May .1970, with the rank of captain. He became deputy fire chief in July 1974. In December of 1978, Ron ecame deputy fire chief of the Ajax Fire Dept. and held that position until his death. He is survived by his wife, daughters Lorna (Mrs. David Guest), Shirley (Mrs. Brian Mat- thews), Lestey . (Mrs. Glen Dickson) sons David and Charles (and daughter-in-law Grace.> Also survived by brother Victor, sister Hendrecka and sistèr-in-law Barbara and eight grandchildren., The funeral was hetd at the W.C. Town Funeral Home on. June 27, conducted by 'Rev. Chartes Bull. In- terment at Thornton Crematoriuml, Oshawa. ALTHEA DARWEN Althea Darwen of Ajax died on June 25, 1987 in Toronto. She was in her 65th year. She was born in Toronto on January 15, 1922 daughter of Harry and Frances Darwin. She married Donald T. Darwen on May 11, 1946. She lived in Ajax for 30 years and in Toronto for 35 years. She was past president of council I.T.C. organization. She is survived by her husband, son Glen (daughter-in-law Donna> and son Brian. Also survived. by two gran- dchildren Lisa of Ajax and Laura of Whitby. Mrs. Darwen was prcdeccased by sisters Marjorie (Mrs. R.H. Clarke) and Dorothy (Mrs. John, Pemberton). The funeral was held at the W.C. Town Funeral Home on June 30, 1987, conducted by Capt. Douglas Butt, of the Salvation Army. Cremation. GERALD ALLEN BUTLER Gerald Allen Butler died in Whit- by Gencral Hospital on July 6th,. 1987. He was in his 5th year. He was, born in Barrie, Ont. on Dec. 18, 1929, son of John and Ainet- ta (Prince>. Butter. He married Phyllis on July 2,1960. .A wclder, he lived in Whitby for 26 years, and is survived by his wife and daughter, Bonnie, Cheryl and Brenda. Also survived by grandchildren, Nicole, Mandy and Brent, bottiers Jack and Bill, and sisters Arras, Betty and Shirley. Butler was pr edeceased by his parents, brother Ken, and sisters Ainetta and Mac. The funeral was held at the W.C. Town Funeral Home on-Thursday, July 9, 1987, conducted by Rev. McClure.
