Born and raised in the home that is still standing at what was the junction of Way St. and Way Rd., Wilson bas been the )wner of Wilson Auto Centre on Baldwin Street for the past il years. But there is another side of Wilson that not too many local residents know about. He is an an- tique car buff, preferring the classic era of the 50s and 60s. He owns 10 classic vehicles whicb are ail operational, the oldest being a 1948 Ford tow truck whicb be regularly uses in bis business. The truck, wbich is in mint condition No surprises here By DONNA DONALDSON Phil Caînan, owner of Pickering Hyundai at 220 Bayly St. E. in Ajax, says he prides bis dealership on the excellent servicing provided. "We bave stolen a lot of business from other Hyundai dealerships around us who don't concentrate on servicing," says Caînan. Caînan, of Ajax, bas been in the automobile business since 1951, and opened Pickering Hyundai in 1985. Nelson Houston, a sales representative for the dealership, 1[l says the Hyundai Pony was first in- troduced in 1976, to Europe and Asia. Canada received its first ship- ment in 1984, from Ulsan, South Korea, wbere the cars are manufactured. Caînan says they have sold ap- proximately 1,250 new cars since bis dealersbip opened in 1985, with 52 per cent of the buyers being young females wbo commute to the City. "People like to know they can get to wbere tbey want to go, witbout problems. We bave very good cars at very good prices," says Caînan. Me says t bey carry a good supply of parts for people who need repairs and bave five "excellent" mechanics and tbree assistants to serve them. "We make our customers aware of costs in servicing in advance, s0 there will be no surprises later," says Caînan, and adds, "'We're here and doing the bestto look after our customers. " now, was constructed by Wilson from two separate "wrecks" he found sitting under an apple tree on the Van Camp property in Port Perry. Out of the two, came the one he drives today, complete with the original drive train. Wilson was fortunate enougb to have obtained about haif of bis cars in running order. The other baif, however, he describes as "the pits." But no matter how they star- ted out, they are now in factory showroom shape. Wilson not only has the exterior in A-i condition, but the engines sparkle and the in- teriors are ail reupholstered as they were they day they rolled off the line. Most of Wilson'-s acquisitions were made in the general -kicinity of Brooklin. Two, however, have travelled considerable distance to reach this area. Me bas a 1956 Ford Crown Victoria which he spotted in Texas and a 1964 Ford Galaxy con- vertable that made its way to Brooklin from North Carolina. Wilson admits he does not have the time to enter bis vehicles in competitive shows, but bas had his vehicles used in such period movies as Kane and Abel, l'Il Take Manhattan, The Big Town and more rec ently, Hoover vs. Ken- nedy, which was shot on location"in Oshawa, Port Hope, Newmarket- and Toronto.
