JULY 29,1987 li SPORTS Devine takes over as coach Bryce Jordan is out and Cam Devine is in as coach-of the Whitby Warriors junior A lacrosse team 'now in the playoffs. "We were not having a par- ticularly good year and we needed a shake-up," ·said team general manager AI Garrard of his decision to replace Jordan. "It's that sim- ple." Garrard said he made the change because of problems with players, not .nrdan "You can't pin anything on the coach. But we had to change," said Garrard. He not only wants the team to turn around its fortunes as it enters the playoffs against St. Catharines this week, but he's looking ahead to next vear when 18 of this season's 23-player Warriors' roster are eligible to cone back. He's hoping Devine can instill a change of at- titude and more intensity in the players. "We've had a good practice and the boys seem to be bearing down. It looks favorable." Garard said of the team under Devine's direction Brooklin Iriders in Km gston suspended Kingston has been suspended from further play in the junior division of the Eastern Ontario Baseball Association league after allegedly forging game sheets for a doubleheader never played with Whitby. The Whitby team had only eight players show up for a scheduled doubleheader in Kingston earlier this month, so the games were for- feited. Manager Dean Keating cited lack of inteÉest by players and said the team was close to folding, but got commitment at a later meeting to continue the season. Meanwhile Kingston Frontenacs submitted game sheets for 10-5 and 6-2 victories in the doubleheader, according to junior league com- missioner John Graham. The league later learned that no games had been played. "They didn't deny it," said Graham of Kingston management reaction to the forgery claim. Graham said Kingston supposedly fixed the game sheets in order to help Whitby, since regulations for- ce a team to go before the board when there are two forfeits. (Graham said, however. that a doubleheader forfeit may be inter- preted differently than forfeits on two different dates.> Whitby junior player John Phillips represented Whitby at last week's special board meeting when the Kingston team was suspended for the season while the team's managers and coach were suspen- ded indefinitely. Graham said that had Phillips not attended, there was a 'possibility' that Whitby. too. could have been suspended for the season. Whitby coach Dean Keating was unable to attend the special meeting because of a family com- mitment. Graham said a similar situatiò&n occurred within the league about eight years ago when ganes sheets were fixed. Peewees prepare f or nationals in Burnaby, B.C. KELLY KIME couldn't take his faithful steed First Encounter (he calls her Katie) to the national tetrathlon even if he wanted to. She cracked a bone in her leg while riding him to first place in the regional championships that earned him a spot on the Ontario team. Both earned the right to represent On- tario on the national level by placing in the top two at the regional level earlier this month. Bobbi Lehman, 15, will be com- peting in the senior division for the first time while Kelly Kime, also 15, is spending his last year as a junior. Tetrathlon is a grueling event made up òf four sections: cross country riding, swimming, shooting and cross country run- ning. Winners are determined on a total-points system for all' events, and individual winners are declared in each category. The cross country riding is held over a 2,000-meter course of rough terrain. Between 15 and 20 jumps each three feet high are strategically placed and are solid. They cannot be tipped or knocked down which only adds to the dif- ficulty. Perfect timing is a necessity as the rider and horse are assessed penalty points- if they either complete the course to quickly or too slow. The swimming event demands the competitor swim as many lengths of a pool as they are able in a four-minute time frame. Four targets, with five shots each, represent the shooting event. In this, the competitor shoots from a distance of 10 meters with an air pistol. A target is turned and one has four seconds to aim and get away five*shots. The procedure is then repeated until all 20 shots are The Whitby peewee rep lacrosse team will be taking part in the an- nual national tournament to be held in Burnaby, B.C., in August. "The nationals, that's what the kids strive for," says team manger Jim Brown, of the invitational tournament that attracts the top teams from across Canada. "We're walking into something we don't really know anything about." admits coach Neil Ar- mstrong, who hopes to just establish a game plan that his squad can stick with. "We've come a fairly long way from where we started this season," says the ex-Redmen and Oshawa Green Gael and former Whitby Warriors.coach. He's been working his players hard to achieve what he calls a 'blend' of the experienced and inexperienced palyers to become a "relatively competitive team. It's not that the Whitby Il and 12- year-olds haven't already had a good season. They're undefeated in league play against teams mostly from the Toronto-area. "In our own league, we're pretty strong," says Brown. "But outside there's some strong competition." In tournament play, Whitby has won a bronze in Mississauga, and were 'A' finalists in Whitby and Hamilton. They lost both those finals in close games to Peter- borough. The team raised funds to belp pay expenses to Burnaby and is hoping for Wintario assistance. Scott MacDonnell, Wayne Primeau and Shaydon Santos are among the top scorers although Brown says most team members can 'put the bal in the net' when close in. k N ru WHITBY PEEWEE lacrosse rep team members are (front, 1-r) Michael Burrows, Franky Lowe, Dave Powers, Jamie Hogel, Steve Taylor, Jeff Yoo: (second row, 1-r) Matt Sorichetti, Wayne Primeau, Mike Massey, Kelly Wayling, Jay Stewart, Jim Brown; (back, 1-r) Jason Crosbie, manager Jim Brown, Shaydon Santos, Steve de Blois, coach Neil Armstrong, Paul Flintoff, Jeff Armstrong, manager Wayne Massey.
