B Under-11 teamgoes on in Ontario Cup play Whitby Woodworks under-11 boys representative soccer team advanced to the quarter-finals of the Ontario Cup organized by the Ontario Soccer Association by defeating a tough Markham team 2-1 in Markham on July 18. After a scoreless first half with tight defensive play by both teams, Markham struck first early in the second half. Whitby kept pressing for the equalizer which came on a well-placed penalty shot by captain Alex Nichols after a defender pulled down Whitby forward Omar El-Behairy on his way to goal. Both teams had a number of scoÃing chances to put the game away but it was Whitby that got the winning goal with 10 minutes to play in the second half. Whitby's winner came on a beautiful set-up by playmaker El-Behairy. He fed a perfect pass to David Kohek who placed the ball away from the Markham goalkeeper into the net. Whitby withstood last-minute pressure from Markham with strong defensive play from John Diamond, Rudy Kortekaas, Mark Vanderlip, Billy Cardona, Bobbie Morrison, Gavin Tackney, and Alex Nichols. Goalkeeper Petr Brown was also solid in goal for the win- ners. Fulton drives in seven runs Mike Fulton hit a fourth-inning grand slam home run to carry Whitby's bantam all-star baseball team to a 14-3 win over Richmond Hill July 22. Fulton drove in seven runs in the contest while Darrin Lee pitched a three-hitter for Whitby, striking out nine batters. Jamie Watters had a double to produce two runs. Jeremy Harness, another consistent performer for Whitby throughout the season, also had two runs batted-in. Garrard said the Whitby team has not realized its talents, but ad- mits that not having Joe Nieuwen- dyk ("the best junior in Canada," who can't play because of a com- mitment to the Calgary Flames), Gary Roberts (also with Calgary) and Barry Kent ("He would have been our top offensive player if Joe wasn't here" on a scholarship in the U.S. for field lacrosse) has left the team short of what it could be. Garrard said the death of John Pipher in an accident also deeply affected the team as he was a "great contributor both on and off the ice. "We lost a lot when we lost him," said Garrard.
