Free Press photo Opposition continues to tritiurn transport FROM PAGE 2 "criminally negligent in their duties by not making tritium a safeguardable substance," andSaid the tritium "could be bought by anyone and be used for anything" since the government does not restrict sale to members of the Nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty. The DNA sent a letter to Ontario Premier David Peterson ex- pressing their opposition to Ontario Hydro's proposed and current ac- tions, and insisting that Peterson has a "responsibility to prevent any export of tritium." "We are assured that this will be a critical issue in the upcoming election," says Dryburgh. "Once citizens become aware, they will vote accordingly." Peterson has not yet shown unyielding support for either side of the argument, and accor- ding to Dryburgh, "to my knowledge, there has been no specific statement by any political party saying that they are opposed to tritium transport." What the DNA wants is the government to construct removal facilities at each of the other nuclear stations to avoid transpor- tation altogether. This would be a substantially expensive decision, as the Darlington plant alone cost taxpayers $120 million. "Our question is, can taxpayers afford not to?" says Elston. Obituaries MINNIE E.
