Whitby advanced with a 12-4 win over Port Hope (a game completed from an earlier date), and a 5-1 decision over Peterborough. Orillia eliminated Ajax and Bowmanville. Whitby took a 6-11iead in the final, getting hits from Scott Burnett, Scott Tutton, Doug McCorkell, Steve Dormer, Scott Artner and David Grylls, while Dormer kept the Orillia bats at bay for eight in- nings. But Orillia rallied late in the game and had the bases loaded with only one out in the bottom of the ninth and tenth innings. But they failed to score a run. Whitby, the top team in Durham Region this year and champions the past four years, again relied on its strength defence and the goalkeeping of Brent Williams - to capture the Nino Ceccarelli memorial tournantent in Toronto. Michael Hunte fired home the only goal as Whitby defeated the host York Toronto Jets in the final. The York team was formerly coached by Ninon Ceccarelli, and the team was perhaps favored' to win for their popular coach, who died recently. "But our boys just wouldn't let up," said Inez Allen, whose son Dwayne plays for the Whitby squad. Whitby began play in the tour- nament with a 4-0 verdict over Woodbridge. Allen, Hunte, Josh Malarczuk and Mike Molson scored the goals. In the second game, Mauro Bian- co scored with five minutes remaining to give Whitby a 1-1 tie with Rexdale. It would be the only goal surrendered by the Whitby squad in the tournament. Bianco is a standout player for Whitby's under-12 team. he was recruited by the injury-riddled un- der-13 squad, which also includes his brother Tony Bianco, for the tournament. Whitby got to the final by defeating Azzurri, the top under-13 team in Metro Toronto, 1-0 on a goal by Richard Bokor. "Some of the players really got banged up," said Allen of the Az- zurri contest. "It was a hard- playing team." Whitby's other tournament vic- tory was in Michigan earlier this season. The team was eliminated in two other tournaments, in Wood- bridge and Stoney Creek. Allen said the team hopes to do well in a Newmarket tournament in September. Whitby has also been invited to the North Andover in- vitation in Massachussetts in Oc- tober. Senior season ends The season ended for Whîtby's senior baseball team over the weekend with an 8-7 loss to Peter- borough. Whitby had to take both games of a Sunday doubleheader to win the series but fell short in the first gaine as Peterborough ace Brad Clark again stymied the Whitby hit- ters. Whitby lost the first game of the best-of-five series 8-6 on Monday last week. But the league later can- celled the game result and decided to have the game replayed when Peterborough was found to have an illegal player (had not played at least seven regular season games.) Whitby then lost 14-1 on Tuesday, 4-3 on Wednesday and won 8-1 on Friday to avoid elimination. Peterborough will play the win- ner of the Oshawa-Port Hope series. Whitby peewees returned from British Columbia last week as silver medallists in the national lacrosse tournament. Whitby just fell short of the 'A' division gold medal, losing 11-10 to top-ranked Port Coquitlam in over- time. But coach Neil Armstrong was elatedby his team's gritty per- formance, particularly against the strong western Canada clubs. "Our kids played incredibly well," said Armstrong. "We were very, very pleased with them, con- sidering the high level of com- petition." Whitiy had three wins and two losses in the opening round. In semi-final play, Whitby beat Surrey, B.C., 9-8, thanks to a goal with two seconds remaining in the contest. "All the games were very close," said Armstrong. "But we worked very hard, and if youdo that, you always have a chance." Whitby, like Surrey, was not among the four top-ranked teams entering the tournament. But Surrey went undefeated during the round-robin to become the team to beat. A second honor for the Whitby team was the selection of Wayne Primeau as the tournament's most valuable player. But Armstrong said team play and the exceptional goaltending of Jamie Hogel and Daver Powers got the team to the final. skill level of our players was nut as high as other teams," said Armstrong, adding that two members of his team had never played lacrosse before this season.
