About 100 Whitby club members took part, nine of them earning fir- st, second or thirds in their divisions. The tournament, the biggest in this area each year, attracts many black belts seeking points to earn ratings. Corinne Hayes, daughter of tour- nament organizers and Menkyo in- structor Ray Hayes, captured three firsts and a second in junior women's black belt. She also tied in points with Orangeville's John Atkinson for most points in black belt com- petition. Laura Jenkinson of the Whitby club was first in ladies black belt heavyweight and third in kata. Wendy O'Donohue had a second, Lee Hayes had two seconds, and third-place finishes went to Darryl Wade, Guy Perry, Simon Kwong, Neilson Kwong and Cassandra Gloster. Free Press photo Peterborough top tykes in provincial A lacrosse Peterborough won the A tyke championship in lacrosse over the weekend at the 24-team provincials held in Whitby and Brooklin. Whitby's first team had two wins and a loss before being eliminated 5-3 by Six Nations in the A division. Hamilton downed Whitby 7-2 in the opening game, Kurt Kirner and Darryl Lewis getting the goals for Whitby. Darryl Lewis had four goals. and two assists in a 15-1 win over Orillia in the second game. Kirner had three goals, Paul Gray and Ryan Harris two each. Blake Caza, Jamie Wager, Brian Vinent and Jason Hunter also had goals. Lewis had tive and Vinent, tour, in a 16-0 romp over Orangeville. Caza had two and singles went to Gray, Hunter, Wager, Ken Belanger, Ryan Harris and Joel Johnson. Lewis scored two and Vinent one in the loss to Six Nations. Whitby's second team lost 13-0 to Arthur, 11-1 to Niagara-on-the-Lake and 13-2 to Caledon. Casey Dupont had a goal and Jim Walker, two, for Whitby. Peterborough downed Spartan (St. Catharines) 6-4 in the A final. Burlington won the B final, Dun- nville the C final and Caledon the D championship. Brooklin Redmen closed out round-robin action last Tuesday with a 13-4 romp over Fergus Thistles and now are in a best-of- seven series with Peterborough Lakers to determine top gun in On- tario major lacrosse. Before their home crowd, Fergus made a real game of it during the first 20 minutes of play, trailing the mighty Redmen by a 3-1 score. But as the second period wound to a close, it became apparent Fergus had run out of steam and ability. Brooklin built up a 9-1 lead heading for the final frame and outscored Thistles 4-3 in the last period. Kevin Antrim, Derek Keenan and Dale Kernohan each tallied a pair of goals for Redmen, while John Fusco, Blaine Harrison, Jerry Fit- zgerald, Emil Labaj, Jim Meredith, Eric Perroni and Barry Brear scored single goals. Netmin- der Wayne Colley also managed to pick up an assist. Bob Hanley, Bill Cuddy, Brad Hause and Ed Comeau each scored for the- Thistles, who finished the Whitby loses close final in Pelham Whitby paperweights were edged 6-5 in the final of the Pelham soccer tournament held recently. Blaine Down had three goals and Jeff Frazer four, Blaine Lawson two, and Matthew Camenzul and Michael Gallas one each in the game. Down and Dupont each had four goals, Cuthbertson three and Joshua Brimble two in a 15-5 win over Six Nations. Frazer scored three times and Cuthbertson twice in an 8-4 win over Pelham that carried Whitby to the final. round-robin series with an 0-4 record. Redmen and Lakers started their best-of-seven playoff series against each othér last (Tuesday) night, and the results of this game were not known at press time. However, Redmen, at 23-0 over the season have beaten Lakers nine times in as many games, often by a one-sided score. The winner of the series will go bwimmer Derek Phillips of Whit- by won a gold and two bronze medals in the Japan Junior Olym- pics Aug. 4-7. "I'm happy," said Phillips of his results as a member of the Ontario- Quebec team which competed in Mito City, Japan. "I'm getting a lot better internationally.", The 16-year-old student of Henry Street High School earned bronze in each of his backstroke events, the 100 and 200-metre. He was part of the relay team which won the 200- metre individual medley..- Phillips also won a gold and two bronze at a previous competition in Germany. "I just like to represent Canada internationally," said Phillips of his summer- success. He will resume his heavy training schedule at the Ajax Aquatic Club in the fall, hoping to lower his time in the 200 backstroke. "I want to place well at the Olympics trials in May.' Phillips has a personal best of two minutes, eight seconds for the distance. He'll be working to shave five or six seconds from that time to Western Lacrosse Association for the coveted Manri Cup, emblematic of the Canadian lacrosse cham- pionship. At last report, New Westminster Salmonbellies (Red- men rivals for the past few years) are again leading in the western division with 15 wins in 19 games.
