S. (lexaco station> 1 668-8759 By ROXANNE REVELER The three candidates running in the Durhamn East riding during the provincial election campaign have varied views on the formation of a state-run auto insurance schemne. Like her party leader, Bob Rae, New -Democrat candidate Marg Wilbur feels the matter of automobile insurance is one of the main issues in the carnpaign. "I continue to hear horror stories frorn people as I canvass door to door throughout the riding (Durham East)," says Wilbur.' "Most (people talked to) feel their insurance rates are far too high, that they are unfair." She states that not only were drivers age 16 to 25, lumped together and forced to pay exor- bitant rates, but so were the elderly. "I have been told many .times that women, after losing their husbands, have been forced to get a driver's licence for the first tirne and because they have not been driving for years, if at all in the past, are penalized heavily when it cornes to car insurance rates." She said this was like being found guilty before a trial and was unfair. Wilbur said she has no doubts at all that a provincially-run insurance scherne would work in Ontario because it had proven s0 successful in British Columbia, Manitoba and Saskatchewan. "The NDP would take the best ideas from the provinces already operating- their own insurance plans and corne up with one that really does the job here (in'On- tarlo> ", Wilbur says. Diane Hamre, Liberal candidate, says "the government definitely should flot get involved in the in- surance business." She says her goal, if elected, would be to take a good look at how to make insurance rates fair and equitable for everyone. "It's certainly not fair to lump those of one age bracket inito the whole because of the driving record of a few," she concludes. Progressive Conservative can- didate Sam Cureatz says the NDP is offering a "big package" of auto insurance, making it a major'focus in the provincial election cam- paign. But he says he is "flot par- ticularly irnpressed." He says he did have some difficulty accepting the premiums charged to those in the 16 to 25 age bracket, stating no- one should "lbe judged guilty until something happens." Cureatz feels a review of the auto insurance in- dustry was in line, but that a state- run scheme would not work at alI. "I arn really sick and tired of he aring (from' the NDP) in the House about the province taking over and operating the car insuran- ce business," says Cureatz. "They (the NDP) seem to forget how inept governrnent-run plans should be. They should take note of Workers Compensation... .that's a real mess and so would an insurance plan."
