PAGE 24, WHITBY FREE PRESS, WEDNESDAY, AUGUST 26,. 1987. Redmen are halfw ay to Mann Cup berth Brooklln Redmen have played their first two games in the best-of- seven Ontario lacrosse major series playoffs against Peter- borough Lakers, and as a resuit have two easy wins under their belts. The first match took place in Brooklin's Luther Vipond Arena where Redmen controlled the play from the opeming whistle. They lead 9-4 after the first 20 minutes of play and 16-4 heading for the final frame to rack up a 21-6 victory. Bill Callan, who was brought up from the junior Whitby Warriors squad, netted two goals for the night, as did Gil Nieuwendyk, Kevin Antrim and Blaine Harrison. Jinm Meredith hit for four goals and two assists, and Dale Kernohan had three goals and two assists. But it was Derek Keenan who was the man of the hour wifh a nine-point night, including five goals and four assista. Bruce Redwood popped in a single goals to finish off the scoring for Brooklin; On the other side of the board, Kevin Evans picked up a pair of goals for Lakers, with singles coming from Andy Shaughnessy, Mike Burke, Bruce Ogylvie ahnd Mark Evans. Surprisingly- enough, penalties were kept to a minimum during the first gamfe, and save fora major donnvbrook between Redmen's Emil Labaj and Kevin Evans of Lakers in the second period, it could almost have been called tame. Both received five minute majors for fighting with Labaj picking Up an additional high- sticking minor. The same could flot be said of 'the second game in Keene. With ref Don Brockie cancelling at the eleventh hour, Gerry Blodgett, who hadn't worked a major game this year, was brought ini to back up Jim Richardson. Both are' relatively inexperienced officials and the result was possibly to be expected. Laker were hit for 101 minutés in penalties, while Redmen were assessed 58 minutes. Peterborough appeared chippy, a condition that got worse with every Brooklin goal that entered the Lakers' net. Red- men led 4-0 going into the second stanza and 7-3 heading for the final stretch as they headed for a 10-5 win, putting them ahead in the series two games to zip. Kernohan, Keenan and Eric Perroni each netted a pair of goals with singles coming from Nieuwendyk, Meredith, Harrison and Andy Perroni. Game three of the series went ahead at Brooklin on Tuesday night, however the results were not known at press time. Game four is scheduled for Keene on Thursday and if a fourth match is necessary, it wil be played at Luther Vipond Arena on Sunday, Aug. 30. Start time is 8:30. The Whitby lineup was reduced when players quit, for various reasons, near the end of the regular season. And two of the team's stalwarts, Scott Tutton and Rod Nichols, missed the last two playoff games against Orilia when they went to the University of Mississippi. Tutton, the team's regular cat- cher, had a healthy .453 batting average for the regular season to lead the club.
