WHITBY FREE etRESS, WEDNESDAY, SEPTEMBER 2,1987, PAGE 21 t' ,*ê RODERICH.ROSS HOUSE GEORGE ROSS HOUSE STEPHEN THOMAS HOUSE House tour part of Downtown Heritage Day, Sept. 12 In conjunction with the Down- town's Heritage Day activities, a house tour of some of Whitby's finest old homes and one of its newest "traditional" buildings is being held by the Durham Branch of the Architectural Conservancy of Ontario. A highlight of the tour is acluster of three homes, all on the same block behind the Whitby Library, built by Roderick Ross, a Scottish mason and two of his sons between 1867 and 1888. Right across the street from one of these is an interesting turn of the century house with a cross gambrel (barn) roof. The new building on the tour is the Byron Estates Condominiums recently completed by the Sorichet- ti Group, a Whitby construction company. The model suite which is normally viewed by appointment only will be open for this tour. Just down Byron St. is the Carriere's, the southernmost unit in the Terrace, one of the finest surviving examples of Victorian row housing in all of Ontario. Originally, these units were designed for doctors and lawyers and those who would have con- clucted tneir professions out of the front rooms while living at the back and upstairs. The Carrieres now operate a hair salon on the ground floor and have rebuilt the upstairs into a spectacular two-level apar- tment for themselves. A few blocks away at the corner of Palace and John is the former St. Heritage events planned Horse and buggy rides, log- sawing cornpetitions and quilt- making demonstrations will be among the activities for downtown Whitby's Heritage Day on Satur- day, Sept. 12. John's Church which has been con- verted into a private dwelling. So far the tour is very compact, confined to a radius of a few blocks, but the last building, the -Stephen Thomas house is five miles north on Hwy 12 in the Village of Brooklin. In spite of the distance most people will want to make the trip because it is a rare opportunity to see the in- sides of a beautifully cared for Vic- torian country manor. The house is currently unfurnished and is listed for sale at only $790,000. The agent has agreed to open the house on this day only to ticket holders. Tour tickets. are $10 and are available at the Whitby Free Press, Middleton's and some other down- town businesses as well as at the houses on the day of the tour.
